are the new raptors ever going to come out?

don't think they are ever coming out. i also noticed that the price for raptors on newegg went from 108 to 122, either demand went up or supply went down, or both.. dunno.

The StorageReview article from Nov 11 said their 74 GB Raptor was still an engineering model without all the final features. That means that there is still a few more weeks at least until it would be released. The release date I'd always had heard was mid November, so they are behind schedule.

That same article said that the 37 GB model won't be released until all the current 37 GB Raptors are sold - meaning likely not until next year.

Put it this way, I see no reason why WD would still manufacture "old" 36GB Raptors once the technology on the 74GB is in place. (Why keep both technologies online when one is better?) Granted, only someone from within WD could shed some light.

We just won't know for a while if a randomly-selected 36GB Raptor is the new model or the old. Maybe manufacture date would help.

-SUO, just guessing out loud

I know that when the Platters changed on the SE HD's there was no official notification between the 2. Even the Techs @ WD can not tell a consumer the difference but they change in Unison for cost efficency.

I can't wait to hear how they perform in a real world environment. The stats are impressive, but the reviews from the average joe are what impresses me most.

The only (easy) pre-purchase way to determine is by looking at the disk cover on the top. This was true with other models as well since you can get a 1200JB with 40, 60, or 80GB platters. Obviously the higher areal density results in better streaming performance and the firmware for such models is tuned appropriately.

Look here

Cheers!

Ooops... I meant the old 36gb raptors vs. the new 36gb raptors... from the looks of it the newer 74gb model isn't "that" much faster... all that seems to be better is maybe it's a little quieter

Quick question ... did any knowledgeable person (say, from WD) actually confirm that the 36GB Raptor would be upgraded to the newer technology slated for the 74GB unit? To us, it makes sense that they wouldn't keep using the "old" technology. However, I don't recall seeing a valid confirmation.

ATACOM doesn't seem to acknowledge that the drive is in stock. Maybe too many pre-orders.
