I see this mention every where but Maxtor's website just say Hydrodynamic Bearing motor technology (optional on some models). Does anyone knows?
I think that these drives can be change in their acoustic management with a software. Where can I find the software to change in the BIOS? Also anyone has done it? Is there a big improvement in performance and noise?
Thanks.

I have three drives, two 40Gbs in Raid, and one 80GB. They sound like jet engine. Does your sounds like that? Is there a way to quiet them down? I am thinking about RMA them.
Thanks.

Most are but not all, my 80gig is a ball bearing model, the D740x are on thier way out anyways having been replaced by the Diamondmax Plus 9 series, the +9 series are all FDB.

So if my serial numbers are all numbers without the L, does this means I don't have any of the fluid bearing drives?

I don't know how reliable the serial # method is, but you can definitely tell by the model number. If the second to last digit is an L it's fluid, J is ball. The 3rd-5th digits are the capacity, and the last digit is the number of read/write surfaces.

40GB Fluid : 6L040L2
40GB Ball : 6L040J2
80GB Fluid : 6L080L4
80GB Ball : 6L080J4

Do you guys think the fluid bearing drives last longer than the ball bearing? How much longer do you think?
What about the acoustic management?

I am confused by your reply. I have two Maxtor 6Y060L0. Now by your explaination they are fluid drives but they have 0 read/write surfaces, how can that be?

I started with a TI 994A and every computer that I have had since then, that I was able to put another HD in, has been a Maxtor except one and that one was way back and it was a Segate. The Segate is also the only one I have had problems with.

P4PE loaded (not the gig LAN the regular)
Win XP Pro
512 DDR 2100 (going to change that)
SONY CD-ROM
SONY CD-R?RW
Antec 835II
Maxtor 60gig X2
