PC games today with their DRM,activations..etc, can shove it. no resale value and the publishers treat you as if in their eyes, your probably a pirate. pc hardware updating gets very expensive and to stay on top you need to do it once a year at least, update drivers and fixes like its a freaking anti-viral drug or something..all of which i wouldnt mind so much if devs would develop specifically targeting its power, but alas, instead its just ports.
console games dont have the best graphics, little to no kb/mice option and thats about the only negatives.

the next generation of consoles will probably wipe out any benefit pc gaming currently has left, which isnt much anymore. the only ones playing pc at that point will be pirates who are too cheap to buy console games.

Clueless, you are.

Agreed with this one. But it did make me laugh,.

If I played consoles, I would have purchased far more games, because the quality of most console games simply isn't up to par, especially with multiplayer aspect and custom content.

Yeah but would I rather play a mediocre game like Crysis at sub par settings to get playable framerates or play an awesome game at framerates and visuals the developer intended on a console. I'd go the console.

...and?

That is such a shallow aspect of a game. I hate this GRAPHICS!!!11! obsession people have. Console players have it to.

Gameplay > graphics

Saying PC gaming is better because the graphics are better is not very convincing.

Honestly, at this point in time, I would say that console gaming probably is generally better than PC gaming. Console exclusive games > PC exclusive games recently.

graphics doesnt make a game fun to play. paying $500 for a video card to play the same games with the same A.I, audio, physics...etc does not make one platform better than another.

no sorry, having 16xAA, higher resolution, DRM, limited activation, buggy gameplay and paying $50 on top of a $200-$500 video card plus whatever else one spends just for gaming only does not make it clearly more fun than a game i can go rent and beat it in a weekend.

i actually play games, enjoy them, beat them and move on, i dont stare at scenes and walk around in awe thinking..."wow, what beautiful shadows that tree is casting on the ground" lmao
seriously, wtf! go outside if your gonna do that, play the games for fun, not for graphics. anyone that says a high resolution ground texture or something is fun needs to be smacked.

I used to prefer the game systems hands down. But now the worst things about PC gaming have begun to slowly but surely show up on the other side...... Mandatory instal of games and companies releasing bug ridden unfinished crap early because they know they can patch it later.

Fortunatly the MMO hasnt taken over, but its just a matter of time before the WOW equivalent takes over.Probably with the next console releases.

Console games tend to be more approachable but have less substance. They're also more likely to support multiplayer on the same screen. A wider variety of, and more total, sports games are available on consoles. Strategy, role-playing and first-person games are more common for the PC.

The guy going off about the cost of PC gaming is either clueless or deliberately lying to win an internet argument.

As for the future, I see PCs becoming smaller and more living-room friendly. The informed consumer can already buy or build one which looks like it belongs in the living room, hook it up to his HDTV and enjoy wireless gaming. The only thing separating a PC from a console at that point is the type of games available. I'd give it at least 10-15 more years until the general public catches on though. As it does, I expect console sales to start dropping. Eventually the market won't support separate platforms any more and developers will come back to the PC.

For the time being, I'm certainly not buying 3 separate computers (xbox, wii, ps3) which are proprietary and nonupgradable when I already own one which is more versatile, upgradable and not proprietary. I'd rather be lining the pockets of game developers than Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

PCs are the master of online multiplayer and custom content.

Do you really think the console game makers want console gamers to be able to access stuff like that and to be able to produce their own content (which must be difficult without using a PC)? Do you really think they want to release games that people will play for years as a result of excellent online multiplayer and custom content?

I don't think so.

Its not what console makers want cause we know the devs dont want restrictions or license fees do they?
However the reality is...their freaking doing it anyway. $$$$ talks, bs walks. you know that.

as far as MP games being played for years...well Warhawk is old and still packed so is condemned 2. Actually all the MP games on consoles have quite alot of people playing, but PC MP tends to fade out...just look at how empty Prey's servers are and i really enjoyed MP in that game.

It is sad. i dont want to be right or try to win arguments. i just tell it how it is and some people here dont want to open their eyes. Reality is truth and the truth hurts.
If they want to play console ports on $1000 + rigs then have at it. However, they should not make threads complaining about DRM or its limited activations...c'mon now.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but in my opinion, PC gaming is in a sad state right now. Mostly console ports and MMOs, no really exclusive titles from anyone except Blizzard. (They wouldnt really put Starcraft 2 on a console would they???)
The advantage I see to PC gaming is that if you just want play a few games on a casual level, you dont need a dedicated system. Just a decent PC and add a low to mid level graphics card. I know on a high end system the graphics will be better than a console, but honestly after a certain point, how good do the graphics have to be??
The only real advantage to the PC is strategy games and there have not been any really good ones released lately. Hopefully Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 will be PC exclusives and be very good.

there have been RTS games on cosnoles in the past. though RTS games on pc's it seems to be the most popular genre for it, will likely be extremely popular so theres probably no need to bring it to console

would be nice, some do though and they ahve kb/mice combos marketed towards consoles but hopefully console makers need to make that option mandatory in the license agreement, otherwise most devs wont do it

I would say this is the answer to the OP's problem. In the NES days, every NES game was a Mario 3 rip off. Then in the early 90s every PC game was a Doom rip off. Now every game is a Halo rip off. It's not worth buying games that don't do anything original, but they're still worth renting. This leads to an interesting situation where I only buy PC games (usually RPG-like games that can't be completed in 5 days), but I rent a lot of Xbox games.

1)You can constantly upgrade as much as your funds allow to always have the best performance possible.
A lot of people would see that as a bad thing since it's a bit of a grey area if it will work or not. Console requirements are simple - do you own an Xbox yes or no. PC requirements are tricky because the requirements on the box are just made up; they never actually test if the game will work with that configuration.

You can play games on a PC in a window and do other things at the same time!
This is mostly true, but not always. Some companies are hell bent on pissing people off as much as possible (Ghostbusters, Guitar Hero 3, Fable).

Seriously, end of 2006 I built a core 2 duo PC with an X1950XT and 4GB of ram for around $800. Such a PC would still offer acceptable performance nowadays if you're willing to deal with toned down settings or don't play the latest and greatest (team fortress 2 for instance runs quite well on an x1950xt).
It seems a lot of people don't know how to do this. Going into driver settings to disable things like AA and AF while forcing trilinear mipmaps and half-ass texture filtering makes games run a lot faster. Sure it's rendered like a 5 year old is drawing it with wax crayons, but it's worth it when the game runs at a constant synchronized 60fps. Even with my crappy 3 year old video card, modern games will run very fast at full 1680x1050 resolution. If that fails, turning it down to 1280x800 (same aspect ratio) works great.

another edit:
The one graphical advantage the PC always has is draw distance. I played Left 4 Dead on Xbox and it had the weirdest draw distance I've ever seen. Stuff 5 feet away from me looks 3D, but everything farther than that looks like it's a jpeg image. The game is still playable and it's fun, but it looks really strange. You would need to play it to understand what I'm talking about.

Take a look at any cross-platform game and you'll find the PC coming out consistently ahead of consoles in terms of visuals and performance.

I have played, Mass Effect, Assasins Creed, COD4, and Dark Sector on both the console and PC and I liked all of them except for Ass Creed better on the PC than the Console. They all run much better on the PC. Creed does too but its harder to play that game with a kb/m.

on who's rig exactly? since everyones vary so much both in hardware and in software configurations.

the correct word is "potentially" or a more realistic word is "theoretically"
great visuals and performance dont typically go hand in hand. even the richest people found that out when crysis was released an nothing could max it out and play 60fps.

I've played computer games since 1985 and i've never seen it so bad or so complicated with potential issues and tweaking. even in the win98/me era games on pc were pretty straightforward to play with no b.s. assuming you didnt rely on an integrated graphics chip.
slap in a voodoo video card and you were set for the best 3d experience the devs intended.

Until TF2 is fun on the console I'll stick to the PC. 1st person shooters without a mouse/keyboard are brutal to play.

Try playing Left 4 Dead on Xbox. It's ok when Halo 3 is slow as balls since you're only playing against other control-crippled players, but L4D is very frustrating. I don't think I've ever seen the survivors win. Smokers in the PC version aren't a threat since you can shoot the tongue 1 time and it releases, but on Xbox it's really really hard to aim at the tongue. We end up spraying bullets at the smoker and pray that we hit him.

That is going to depend on the kind of games you like to play.

If you remove all other aspects (cost, hassle, resale ability, etc) aside from whether or not the games are more fun I'd say it is a toss up. Both PCs and consoles have fun recent games.

Look at a site with recent reviews under PS3, XBOX or Wii and see if the list of games with high ratings are games you feel like you are missing out on. If so than you'd probably enjoy a console. If the list of highly rated games doesn't interest you than a console would likely be a waste.

If you are looking for innovative you probably need to look past the AAA high end titles and look towards the smaller games that are only available for download. Innovative and different gameplay seems to be coming in small packages from indie developers. Those type of games seem to be available all over and aren't necessarily tied to one console or another.

As some have said here, it really is up to you and your taste in games whether or not consoles are the better route to take. I personally have never given a crap about consoles and haven't owned one since SNES.

All the games I enjoy playing are on the PC and are more playable IMHO. Upgrade costs are mitigated as I sell my previous hardware and pay a little more for much better performance whenever I feel the need/desire, which really isn't that often. I play RTS games, online shooters (much better on the PC IMHO, what with free MP and the superior keyboard & mouse), RPGs (not to be confused with hack & slash "action RPGs"), sport & racing games (via controller), you name it. Not to mention all the custom content you can get with PC games, and for me it's a no brainer which platform is better.

That being said, there are pros and cons to both consoles and PCs. However, there is no definite answer as each person has their own likes and dislikes.
