Are the "fuzzy logic" rice cookers worth it?

Ford Mustangs 😛

Aww, come on glen, don't nef on the rice thing, they'll lock my thread so I won't be able to find out how to make good rice and I'll starve to death 😛

glen,

If you cook different types of rice (i.e. sushi / sweet / porridge / brown) or keep your rice around for >12 hours then yes, they are worth it.
If you just want a solid, reliable rice cooker go with Tiger or Zojirushi. Both are kind of pricey but definitely worth the extra dough if you enjoy your rice.

Jzero - I'm assuming you're not even remotely Asian otherwise you'd understand the sheer necessity of having a rice cooker in one's home. I'm sure my fellow Asian ATOT'ers will agree wholeheartedly. 🙂

Whitewonder - Fuzzy Logic rice cookers cook rice differently depending on various conditions / rice type so you ALWAYS end up with the perfect pot of rice. They also have the ability to turn on/off the heating element so your rice doesn't dry out if you leave it on for a while.

National / Panasonic is a good brand. We have that, and my friends have it too.. its solid. Very very simple to use.

Now to make rice (worth this is for you).

depending on the size of your cooker, say you put in 1 cup of raw rice. Pour water in it so you cover all the rice. Then put your index finger in the bowl with the finger pointing downwards and at the level of rice in the bowl as the starting point, put in water until the water rises to the first mark of your index finger.. that is the amount of water you need to cook rice.. and iti will come out perfectly.

If you want you can add a tinny bit of salt and your ready to go.

It also depends on the rice.

If you get that crap Botan california rice in the supermarket you'll need more water (but it will still taste like crap). i just go home on the weekends and steal the fancy Shirakiku rice my mom buys. Hehe. (hey at $16 / bag I can't really afford it on my own...)

I've found that about a 1:1 rice:water ratio works nicely for most decent brands of short grain rice...I like mine a little moist so I add a couple extra tbsp water.

girlfriend says, put rice in pot. then touch the rice with the tip of your finger then fill the water up to the first line on your finger

the 'sealed' rice cookers like the fuzzy logic ones you are talking about make really good rice. yes the 6 cup National rice cooker makes decent rice, but nothing compares to rice that is perfectly fluffy and not too wet. 🙂 if you have the extra cash, yes go for one, if not go with the cheaper National brand rice cooker.

Top of the line rice cooker would be the Zojiroushi.
