I'm no great historian but I do know that the French successfully invaded and colonized many countries in the last 1000 years. Take England for instance....

<< why is it that Quebec is the ONLY place in North America where you can't make right turns on a red? perhaps because they are retarded? most likely >>

before we begin let me say that I don't like the french and the following is just for you personal amusement.

Actually you can't do that in NYC either. Its because people in the city drive like my grandma on crack. and if you block the box its a heavy fine. double if the box has stripes painted on it.

Let's not forget that the French refused to allow Spanish refugees to enter France when Franco and the Fascists were massacring them, and, without orders from the Nazis, rounded up tens of thousands of French Jews and handed them over to the Germans for extermination. The recent remarks of France's ambassador to England, Daniel Bernard, in which he called Israel a "shitty little country" also do little to boost my enthusiasm for the French.

Or.....Not letting the U.S. use their precious air space to bomb Libya. Some think that we lost one fighter due to this. I can only laugh when French bitch about terrorism. Their solution is to coddle them and cower from them. I'm waiting for the French to aplogize to terrorist on our (US) behalf in hopes of starting trade with them (note:Iraq).

The British on the other hand, are some bad-ass, yet smart bunch. I can't figure out why the Brits just don't close that tunnel and eliminate the infiltration of whiney cowards from the other side. As much as I loath the French, I admire the Brits.

I'm late to this topic but Skoorb,

French women, on the whole, are not attractive...where did you get that idea? Have you been to France? The chic ratio in france is far lower than in, well, California, at least. Now I grant you that Paris is beautiful and I remember clubbing in France at a couple of spots that ladden with hot women (Berlin and Prague too, I might add...but Prague was freakin' packed with university students on vacation so the babe concentration was bound to be high)...but the concentration of babes is at high point in exclusive areas like Hollywood at places like the viper room or the Rox, etc.

AFAIK, Iceland and Sweden/Norway have the highest veritable babe per capita...as long as your into blondes...which doesn't happen to be my particular thing...my wife, who is currently in southern Spain for the next 2 weeks (sigh:(), has beautiful dark hair.

"World War II and its aftermath was another landmark event in French-American relations. U.S. military forces played a key role in liberating France from the Nazi occupation. France received the third-greatest amount of aid under the Marshall Plan (after the U.K. and Germany). The Marshall Plan not only helped reconstruct the French economy but served as a model for European economic integration and the creation of the European Economic Community and the European Union.

Today, France is a major economic partner of the United States. The United States is the largest direct foreign investor in France. American companies have put $33 billion into the French economy, and are responsible for creating 400,000 jobs in France."

The French should be kissing our butts rather than making fun of us and trying to thwart us at every turn.

Aelus, a couple of years ago I attended a conference in Antwerp. I met my Parisian father-in-law in Brussels (what an armpit by the way) and from there we went to Amsterdam before going to Antwerp.

What I found interesting was that at a subway station in Antwerp my father-in-law asked for directions in French and no one would answer him. He had to ask in English.

I found this quite strange because most people in this area appear to speak Flemish, French, English and sometimes German.

I'm not very familiar with Belgium. Can you enlighten me on the relationship between the French speakers and Flemish speakers?

The ignorance and hostility in this thread is mind-boggling. Like Michael said, if all these jokes were directed toward some race, 50 ppl would have been banned already. I guess the mods like their double standards though....

I'm Dutch, I live close to France and I've seen enough of France and the French to stay with my claim. If you think Hitler was right-wing you have never spoken to a French person.

flemish people have a dislike for french, like walloons have a dislike for dutch. It's hard to explain why, but it's mostly an emotional thingie. flanders was "frenched" for about a century, so that's why most flemish people dislike speaking french in flanders. Walloons on the other hand, feel surpressed in belgium, because economically, flanders is much more important nowadays, and they feel like they are now being colonized.

regardless, i'd much rather be on an island with french people than with dutch people, the horror to even think about it....

I have nothing against the French, I never considered them any different from anyone else. I been to the French side of Canada and its beutiful. If it has has any importance, I was born in Russian during the Soviet Union and migrated to America a few years before it callopsed. Are American's bashing France more then others from Europe.

My father-in-law I were visiting a vintner in Sancere a while back. Just after we arrive, a beat-up car with Dutch plates pulling a trailer drives in.

My father-in-law strikes up a conversation with the guy and apprarently he's in a wine club or something and he's travelling around France picking up wine.

We go inside for a tasting and the Dutch guy swills the free wine and leaves without buying anything, not even one bottle.

My father-in-law wasn't very surprised. The Dutch are well recognized in France for being cheap bastards. I now understand the term "Dutch treat".

Hi Riprorin

I'm also from Belgium. There is a political movement in Flanders to seperate us from the french speaking part of Belgium. For decades now the french speaking part has a poor economy. Lot's of money is transfered every year by the Federal Govt from flanders to the south (french speaking part) to support them (social security, healthcare. etc). Until WW 2 the flemish were discriminated in various ways (polical, justice, etc) because french was like the "official" language for everything. Since the 1950-1960 flanders is dominant. Flanders is probably now one of the richest regions in the world while the french speaking part has very serious troubles (high unemployment) because they failed economic reconversion since the closure of the coal mines in the 1950-1960's . For lots of flemish people it's now sort of "payback time". To give you an example. I work in Brussels. A lot of my flemish collegues (who speak french fluently) refuse to speak french with a Walloon. As a "Belgian" you are supposed to know French and Dutch. Most flemish people speak dutch, french and english. Most Walloons will only speak french. When you have a conversation with a Walloon it's one-way-traffic (the flemish dude has to speak french because the Walloon's dutch sucks big time).

Aelus: please feel free to correct me if you think i said something wrong :)

Thanks, for the info gentleman. I wish I'd had time to visit more of Belgium. Unfortunately, I only had time to see Brussels, Antwerp, and Bruges. In all honesty, I didn't care much for Brussels but I enoyed Antwerp and Bruges.

The situation you describe sounds a little bit like Canada except that it's the French speakers who want to secede.

I was at a conference in Montreal a few years ago where there were people from Quebec and Ontario. After one of the meetings, a group of us went out for drinks. The coversation turned to politics and a fist fight almost broke out.

Is the situation this tense in Belgium?

Yes and No

A lot has changed since the 70 's. Flemish are now much more independent because of some big constitutional reforms. We have our own flemish govt. now. The biggest problem is Brussels. It's a flemish city but dutch speaking people are a minority. Both parts of Belgium (Flemish and Walloon) claim Brussels as their capital. To overcome that problem we needed a "Belgian" solution. Brussels has it's own govt. and is sort of independant and is officially bilingual (all official papers are in french and dutch). So basically you have a lot of different govt. (federal -- flemish -- walloon -- brussels ...). Belgian politics is really really very complicated with lots of different parties involved. Every political decision is based on a compromise. To give you an idea -- the federal govt. consists of 6 political parties.

Who said French women were attractive?

"Last year's Miss France winner, Elodie Gossuin, 20, was accused of being a man. The issue was resolved following a "close inspection" of Gossuin during the swimsuit and ballgown fittings at the Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico last May. This convinced officials that the student nurse was all woman."

<< ever seen a citroen car? no amount of ricing could improve the looks of that thing. >>

What about the Citroen? They offrer really smooth and comfortable ride (gotta love that gas-hydraulic-suspension)! The new C5 looks OK, but it's not as good looking as the new Renault Laguna (the Laguna II).

I would much rather have a Citroen than any american car. Well, I might have a Cadillac, but I would just sell it and use the money to buy a proper car.
