Are the fans that come in retail AMD chip boxes good enough?

I ordered a 2100+ retail box that comes with the AMD fan and heatsink.

Should be good enough if AMD approves them and sends them out with their chips, right?

I wont be overclocking or anything like that.

I will be playing some games and watching some movies..

AMD gives you a warranty though right?

Like the Coolermaster entry model.

You could say it's bad enough to stop working after 3 years that'll cause your cpu overheated and died, so AMD is bravely giving you 3 years warranty. 🙂

the one that cae with my 1600+ was "sufficient" but no better. Also, the one I got was rather loud so I ended up getting a PAL8045 + Panaflo combo anyway

AMD has switched to Dynatron DC1206BM-L/610-T (if I am mistaken please correct me) coolers. These are OK at most. The $6 GC68 cools better and is quieter too.

But yes, if they are tested to perform and offer warranty then I don't see why you shouldn't use the stock HSF if you are on a budget...

LordJezo, if you're not OC's then the answer is yes, the AMD supplied fan is fine, if a tad bit loud, hope this helps 🙂

I wasn't planning on overclocking my processor either

Do the smart thing and get a better heatsink to get started off right🙂

i have an atlon 1800+ w/stock heatsink. i am not overclocking either. mine idles at 40C and at full load 47C. also my system idles at 24C and 28C at full load. The stock heatsink isnt loud to my ears either.

this is absolutely illogical. lets think about it. what are the most important properties of a heatsink/fan? cooling ability, price, reliability, noise. in the context of *not* overclocking, cooling ability is a non-issue. the stock cooler is sufficient, and thats all that matters. price - this is subjective, you could probably get an oem chip + really cheap cooler, and save a couple bucks, but the 3yr vs. 30 day warrantee is worth a few bucks. plus the stock cooler has amd's word behind it. reliability is questionable, all fans seem to go eventually, its hard to say which are reliable and which are not. and noise - thats the only possible issue with the stock cooler.

so why would you buy a 20-30+ dollar cooler when it will do no better than the included cooler?

a loud heatsink?? nice i gotta find one of them b/c i think they are rare😛

AMD wouldn't be using those HSF's if they weren't good enough to cool their processors. They may not be exceptional, and the 2100+ may not be the coolest CPU around, but it works, and AMD gaurantees it. If anything's wrong, you can always return it for a refund or exchange. If you aren't overclocking, I don't see any reason at all to spend any extra money on another HSF, unless you're running it in a really really hot and poorly ventilated environment, or you just have to have cool temperatures.
