The fact they run at 11,000 RPM is such bullsh!t. It has to be a hardware monitoring error. Any fan of that size at that speed would sound well in excess of 40 dB, enough to deafen you (well at least for a fan). It uses the same fan as in the Golden Orb.

Quoting Millisec.com:

<< "Editorial: About the Chrome ORB... While it is less likely to break your Athlon it is still a POOR performer. Despite the bullsh!t posted on one hardware site about having a 10,000 RPM fan and 25CFM it is still the same green label 20CFM fan and heatsink that performed poorly on VERY HOT Athlons. To make an easy comparison look at the thermal resistance of .81 for the Chrome ORB, .81 for the old 462 Golden ORB and compare to .49 for FOP32, .48 Arcticooler, .37 for PAL6035 and .35 for PEP66. Considering most sites are now stiffing people for $17 for this cooler you are much better off getting the $20 FOP32 at almost twice the performance. If you think I have a conflict of interest keep this in mind... Those sites that have flocked back to this product are making more off the Chrome ORB than I am off the FOP32 or the Alpha's for that matter. Just don't be sucked into fads because some site says it looks cool..." >>

Now - while I do believe Jim Phillips of Millisec.com knows what he is talking about, I have been talking to other prominant people in the resale business as well that tend to think that Jim is full of sh!t and because of past disagreements with other resellers who do back the Chrome Orb. As a result, take his comparison with a grain of salt - the Chome Orb is a fine performer, regardless of the bullsh!t that Jim is spreading. However don't expect an 11,000 RPM fan...that's just insane. The Chome Orb is a good performer, but your best bet is the Alpha PAL6035. Actually, I just got an e-mail from Millisec saying that they were going to get some in. Also - the Vantec is a decent cooler. It is AMD approved, and cheap. But if Ian himself is using it...it's a safe bet.

For a heatsink , I would recommend the Tai Sol T-Bird cooler, it works very well and is quiet, I think it cools to 1.2Ghz, which will be more than enough

Huh? That statement is murky at best.

Nah, I understood what he meant.

AMD certified certain processors to cool effectively only to a certain clock frequency. For example, the Agilent Articooler can cool to 1.4 GHz - but anyting above that is dangerous.

That's a good choice.
If Ian himself uses the Vantec...it has to be at least adequete.

No heatsink yet is good enough for a 1 GHz Socket A tbird...but we're getting there.

get the FOP 32 they can run fine well past ghz mark. IF you want to better cooling get an alpha pal6035 at cpusforless.com (the only place that seems to have it in stock) and maybe the artic silver thermal paste if you really want to drop several more celsius degrees on the temp of your cpu

I just want to add that one good thing with the Orbs in general is the amount of pressure they apply (with the attachment mechanism). But dangerous for some CPU:s...

If you look it up at Thermaltakes website (who is the manufacturer of all the orbs, golden or chrome), they say the fan is rated @ 5500rpm for the duron chrome orb.
