Are the Chinese just more intelligent or what?

OMG.. I was looking thru Concordia's website cause I am considering whether I should go to uni after I'm done college or not (I think my scores are high enough, but it's still extra time that I'll be in school instead of working .. thinking of going into a co-op program if I'm eligible), and stumbled across this.

I was amazed by the overwhelming abundance of chinese names. I know these two chinese guys and they study hard. If I studied like they did, I'd have 100% in all my courses ;)
So why are they so successful? Is it the way they are raised? Is it because many of them immigrate here and work harder because they feel the pressure? Something in the brain psychology? This is a honest question :)

I think mostly its how they were raised. Even laid back/lazy asians are smart too. Might be genetic as well. ;)

One of the best students in my CS program in college was a girl from singapore. She couldn't hardly speak any english, but she could program like mad :)

Cute too...went out on a date with her once...she ended up graduating though :(

I'd bet money on the emphasis their society places on education, they are taught from a very young age how to learn & excel in school. They don't seem to know any other way.

yes, it's in our genes ;)

i think it's the culture... if you notice, the more americanized the chinese guy, or the more banana he is... the worse the study habits get.

I don't think any one particular ethnicity is born innately with a higher than normal intelligence. I do believe it has to do with what you said about a higher work ethic and pressure from parents. Most asian familes understand how much hard work is necessary to prosper here in America, that knowledge is handed down from generation to generation. It is then applied to all aspects of life from schoolwork to the workplace.

I find most Asians are very diligent workers, they will spend every day studying while in college / school.

North Americans generally spend their time doing other things, generally not studying/working as hard.

It seems that accepted Asians lifestyle is to work or study for most hours in a day.

I'm contrasting 200 of my North American schoolmates to 20 or so Asians, there are always exceptions but in general this has been my experience.

its the pressure to perform well in education and get a good job. Every asian family I've known puts a lot of pressure on their children to perform well in school and to get a good high paying job. Thats my view and take on it.

I know for a fact that my parents have pushed me and my brothers hard to study and to 'compete' alot. I'm a very competitive person and strive to be the best in what I do. Sports, education and everything else that I can compete in. I think most asians are like this.

I guess you never hung out with my friends.

I think I was the only one who graduated in 4 years. I think all my friends were on the 7 year undergrad program at my school.

Dumb@sses and morons come in all shapes and sizes.. and they are evenly distributed. The reason you're not seeing a lot of Asian dumb@sses and morons is maybe because you have been only exposed to a minimal Asian population (like those who actually have the will to be successful in their lives). But if you are living in an Asian community, they are as abundant as they can come.

evenly distributed my ass, look at the figures for average income, education, and all that jazz. it is not evenly distributed at all. what you say may be true for other asians, but it is not for chinese, or even japanese.

I would say genetically their brute intelligence may be a bit higher but most of the differences we see are due to work ethic and culture. It doesn't come without a cost though. The average japanese working man could work circles around me but I don't have to drink everynight after work to de-stress myself while entertaining thorughts of suicide.

Gee... either that's a sick attempt at humor or we can call you Mr. White Sheets.

A friend once told me about a book we read about Extra Terrestrials. The book explained that Asian civilizations came about due to Alien beings gettin it on with the Ancient Egyptians. That's why we have narrow eyes, not much body hair, yellowish skin, are a bit shorter, and are good at math. That was the funniest thing I've ever heard.

no, I just like dressing up for halloween early...BOO

heh

it's true...drones...if they aren't studying hard, they're pulling the fast n' the furious. The Asian friends I have are more of the "outliers". My little cousins are Thai, hell, even they act like drones. Borg to be exact...sort of like a collective. Of course, once you get past the first one or two generations, they usually mellow out :)
