I think Pet Sounds is overrated, the Beach Boys themselves are rated just fine I think, maybe a little underrated but I wasn't around when they were big.

I've been listening to Pet Sounds Sessions for the last couple of months. very interesting to hear an album come together. The Pet Sounds album was the Beach Boys answer to the Beatles Sgt. Pepper. The Beatles were just as jealous of the Beach Boys as the Beach Boys were of them.

It's the other way around, Pet Sounds came first, then Sgt. Pepper. Smile would have been the followup in '67. But yes, both bands were supposedly trying to outdo each other for a while there in the mid 60's.

I think anyone who just knows the surf songs of their early career, from oldies radio or commercials, probably underrates them. That seems to be a lot of people.

Masters of harmonizing and multi-tiered vocals. Love them.

Underrated? Probably not.
