I honestly can't really imagine what in the world is racist about any of the simple titles decribing how much black or white a person has in their heritage. Honestly I think this society is too hypersensitive to everything surrounding race nowadays! I was very much discriminated against for my white skin in an all native American community. I really don't have much sympathy for people who overuse the race card!

It's the thought process and acceptance of using skin color to label someone. There are roughly 50 countries in Africa. Which "heritage" are you referring to? Which are the white countries? No one ever said racism was limited to Caucasian folks.

A fair question to ask in answer to the OP's is "Do similar terms exist for mixed ethnicity among other races?" Do Asians have them? Latino(a)s? If they are largely peculiar to African Americans, then I'm gonna say "Yes." I've yet to meet an AA who identified as a quadroon/octacroon.

Accurate and truthful terms cannot be deemed racist when not used in a derogatory manner. Everyone but snowflakes understands this.

I've never heard of quadroon being used in reallife

That's because you were probably born at least a century after the words were in common use. You probably don't hear words like contumely or prithee in reallife or formerly used words for blacks like "nubian" either.

This is a five year necro, but:

Yes, of course these terms are offensive. You're saying how white someone is matters and are imposing that identity on them.

If you label someone mixed-race it's also factual without claiming that the degree of whiteness is their most important characteristic. But ideally you'd let them decide whether they want to identify as race X or as mixed.

Then you haven't read the various threads about racism in ATPN. But ATPN aside, I had a liberal white guy tell me years ago that it was impossible for a black person to be racist. After a couple go-arounds I gave up; he was dead serious.

Well, your waving your white privilege card under their noses didn't help, bro.

Frankly, I wish the term 'race' would be done away with. We are ONE race - the human race - period. Ethnicity is the proper word.

These are terms created & used during American Slavery to identify & oppress people who had 'slave ancestry' but were not visibly identifiable as Black. These labels were used to sustain ownership of people who did not "look" like slaves, & to make sure that anyone with black lineage did not mistakenly get treated as well as "real" white people, or like human beings.

Although some people still use the term mulatto, it is not the textbook definition of all of these "identifications" but their origin, purpose, & historical use that make them inappropriate & offensive.

Please do not refer to anyone by a term that was created & used to validate the misuse, abuse, & ownership of other human beings.

I can only speak from my own experiences, but both 'white' and 'black' people use various terms to identify multi-ethnic people who do not fully comply with their visual, auditory, or other subjective standards of whiteness or blackness.

In my opinion, racist is as racist does .....

ALL humans have biases, whether it be race, religion, education, socio-economic status, gender, marital status, etc....

Know & own yours! Then, you can actively counteract them & prevent their effect on your decisions & your dialogue with others.

I never hear them. Where I live, no one would use them, AFAIK. The word "misegination" is likewise meaningless, it's a melting pot here.

"Mulatto" is probably derived from "mule", as in a cross between a horse and a donkey... I think comparing someone to a mule is pretty damn offensive.
