Are tanning beds that bad for you, in light usage?

Lifer
We all know tanning beds are bad for you, if you look like you just got back from Cancun in July and it's the middle of January. In moderate use, are they that bad for you? In other words, is harmfulness to your skin more of a linear function or is it bad under extremely light usage?

UV light is bad for your skin in any dosage. That said, the effects are probably negligible at that level.

if you use a tanning bed more then 3 times a year you are 7x more likely to get skin cancer, then someone that does not use one

A) Only an engineer would try to consider whether the negative effects of tanning beds are a linear or not.
B) Given that you're an engineer, why the hell does it bother you that you look pasty during the winter. This is expected from engineers at all times of the year and even non-engineers look pasty during the winter.
C) You're an engineer so you're in a sausage factory all day, none of these people will care that you look pasty
D) To conclude, tanning beds are useless to engineers.

 from another engineer

Basically every time a UV ray hits your skin, there is a very tiny chance it will change a gene in a cell that causes cancer.
It's kind of like playing Russian Roulette with one bullet in a many millions instead of 1 in 5. So it's not likely that one tanning session will give you cancer, but it could happen.

Over 86% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
