I just moved from dial-up to DSL and at some point may go to cable for internet access so I was wondering if some modems have ports for both DSL and cable.

Thanks.

A cable modem comes with a USB and an Ethernet cable. So, you can connect through either one but not both at a time.
I think there is an advantage to the cable modem since if you get some kind of bug or whatever that affects your Ethernet adapter, you can switch to the USB connector. That saved me a few headaches.

I have seen DSL modems with both a USB and Ethernet port.

My questions is if modems exists that have connections for both DSL and cable...I don't plan to use them simultaneously. I just want to avoid buying another modem when and if I go to cable internet access.

No, as they are seperate technologies. They require different methodologies and hardware to logging into their respective network types.

As long as you get a docsis 2 compliant cable modem, and a reputable dsl modem you shouldn't have to make any new purchases. Each pays for itself in saved rental fees in less than a year. I've been using my cable modem since around late 2000 and I've recently purchased a dsl/switch combo in mid 04. I don't plan on buying new hardware, unless one breaks. :)

There is no device that handles both DSL and DOCSIS (cable). They are apples and oranges.

The benefit of purchasing a cable modem over leasing from the cable co. is you won't pay any lease on the modem. The downside is, when it breaks, that's your problem.

Modems are generally part of the installation package. You should be asking if there are cable/dsl routers - answer is yes.

$20 for a modem or router would be a good price. Westell has its own FAQ at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/westell - check that forum for known issues with different models . Verizon ADSL used to supply westell m/r - so check if the model you have in mind is acceptable to the broadband provider before you buy.

My broadband provider won't give me a lousy clue to the dsl modem requirements because they want me to buy or rent from them.
