Are soft drinks really that bad for you?

I see on the bottle of coke that each 250ml (1 cup) has 110 calories.

Now, say you were going to eat 6 small meals a day of maybe 300 - 350 calories per meal.

If you only had 1 or 2 cups a day, you are getting a nice treat without adding a bunch of calories to your total input for the day.

It just seems that the problem comes from people who drink like 2 liters a day.

<--- Just had his first glass of coke in 2.5 months.

Sodas = sugar water and no other nutrients.

At least you'd still get some random good stuff from normal meals :)

I'm just saying that unless I'm missing something you CAN include soft drinks in your diet if you consume it moderately.

People want to act like they're health freaks without really thinking about the word moderation. It's definitely not beneficial to you, and you shouldn't drink it during strenuous activities, but other than that it doesn't make your toes fall off or anything.

Soft drinks, especially colas really are bad for your teeth. Sugar + phosphoric acid + carbonated water = hell on your enamels.

One a day, especially if you aren't over doing your calories isn't bad for you. It just isn't providing you anything really beneficial either. But then again, neither is this beer I'm drinking either.

It starts to really be a problem with the people that are drinking a couple 20oz bottles a day. At that point you really are consuming a significant portion of your daily caloric needs in nutritionally void sugar water.

I used to drink about 6l a week, then I cut down to maybe a glass a week if that.
Didn't help me weight wise (I switched to juices), and it didn't really make any difference I could feel physically, so I dunno, doesn't seem like it was all that bad for me, since replacing it with fruit juices didn't change anything.
Been pretty much juice and coke free for the last 4 weeks though (mostly water), and probably will remain so for the next 10 or so, so I will see if cutting out juice changes anything.

They're not that bad, but I can say though that ever since I've cut out juices (including soda, apple juice, etc..) out of my diet, I've reduced my body fat percentage 6 points which is pretty good. Sure I drink a soda or equivalent drink like apple juice every two weeks and I'm fine but drinking that stuff (yes juices too) and other drinks instead of water will make you put on weight unless you can burn it off.

Juices are just as bad, if not worse. Hell an 8oz serving of OJ is 120 calories. That's just as bad as pop as far as calories are concerned because it's all from sugars. You won't loose weight switching to juices unless you pick up the "light" juices that use splenda in place of HFCS or other types of sweeteners.

The splenda sweetened juices are around 40 calories a serving instead of 120.

I don't really drink fruit juice either. If I want juice, I just eat a fruit.

It was about the general health thing, which didn't really change from having fresh juices (not from concentrate) with vitamins and stuff vs coke with HFCS an dnothing worthwhile at all. I didn't feel any different.

12oz of soda has something like 15 teaspoons of sugar. If I drink iced tea, it tastes good with a small fraction of that, more like 2 tsp.

Have any links that don't favor a natural lifestyle v. unnatural? Not saying you're wrong, but he's obviously biased. :)

Of course he's "biased" because that's his field.

Those are peer-reviewed articles in juried journals.

Yeah I was wondering if you had any links handy. I'm not trying to be disagreeable, just wondering about the actual validity. There are a lot of 'experts' but also a lot of contradictory beliefs on many things. :)
