I am about to put a new computer together and am just learning about CPU Shims. Are they really that important and necessary? Any info on shims would be great, thanks.
They're only truly useful if you have a VERY heavy heatsink to mount on top of it.
That way, it prevents the HSF from crushing the core.
For 90% of HSF's though, I wouldn't bother...as long as your relatively careful, you won't crack the core...plus, that's what those 4 pads are for around the core.
U don't need a shims...just be careful during the CPU installation & don't press the HSF...just the clip w/ a screwdriver. Becareful so the screwdriver dun slip. I've seen ppl fried their CPU w/ shims due to improper contact, non-contact & etc. They r still risk.
I've got one but I don't think they are really important. If you do decide to use one make sure it is very good one or you will have problems like Wind said. Mine is from Cooler Guys.
If this is your first socket A install it would be worth using 1 for the added insurance. Take Mitzi's advice and use the shim from Coolerguys as they can't fry your CPU. Here's the link to their shim page Shims that don't suck.
I ordered the non-conducting xp shim from coolerguys last night myself. Forgot to select 3day instead of ground shipping. Fired them an e-mail about it. Got my tracking # tonight with 3 day.
Nice company.
