Don't know if you remember OnVia.com. Back when it was retailing for about $350 US, I was looking for something to replace my 15" monitor. I checked OnVia's Canadian site and it had it listed for $350 CDN. I thought they made a mistake (which they probably did) and ordered it. When I checked their site the day after, it was listed for $550. Woohoo, I thought. But the $350 never got charged to my CC. >>

Damn, you bastard! Lucky! When I built my bro's comp I included a 17" Samsung monitor, it's pretty sweet. It's nice and flat, very clear, etc. AFAIK Samsung has a good rep for reliability. I know for sure I'm safe with anything Optiquest though, from experience (old 15" Optiquest here, which is actually very good, and still works perfectly).

Samsung monitors have a *great* reputation these days. They're fairly affordable as well.

I own the 900NF, which is a top-line monitor. Having said that, mines will need to be RMA'd one of these days when I'm not so lazy.

I use a 900NF and a 700NF side by side. Absolutely love them. Heck of a minitor for the money.

I just got a new dell - dimension 4400, with nvidia geforce 2 mx (64mb). I own samsung 955df. I had it hooked up to my win98 machine before and everything was perfect, crystal clear. Now I have in on winxp, and it is overly bright and blurry... I tried playing with the monitor brightness and contrast controls, didn't help. I tried the video card options to change brightness, that didn't help either. I don't know what to do - I even changed the resolution settings, and every single one has it.

Can anyone help?

Never have had that problem with win XP pro, but download the drivers for the monitor. Here is a direct link: 955DF driver. You may also should upgrade your video driver.

So here's my story:

I had a brand new 955df. I thought that it was too eye straining and out of focus, overly bright (meaning I couldn't turn the brightness down to match the non-voltage area of the screen's black). So I called the tech support, they said they will replace with refurbished unit on site. I waited a week, the guy came this morning. He brought a refurbished 955df (older model, the one with sliding controls, and no highlight feature). Same story though. The tube looks same, can't match the non-voltage blackness. I called tech support they said call customer service tomorrow, see what could be done. So for the hell of it, I walk to best buy tonight, buy 19 inch MAG 986fs (not even flat tube - just your regular cheap crt), I plug it in, and voila - the text is sharp, the blackness can be matched to non-voltage area, the white is white and not gray!!! And that's all even without enhancing with nvidia's controls...

I sure hope that Samsung will say tomorrow, that they will take the computer back and just give me money that I paid for it.

I recommend samsung. I'm using an old SyncMaster 700b (bought almost 4 years ago) and it works fine. It's as crisp as anything I've seen (a lot better than most 19" I've seen) and I've had no problems with it in all of its years of service.

My friend bought a 900NF (model # is right, I think - has a trinitron tube) and it looks great.

i can't recommend samsung monitors (at leas the 955df), here's why:
i've had a 955df since august of 2001, and this is my second one (it replaced the first). the image literally shakes at 1280x1024 (both monitors), and anything less is just huge on a 19". i don't know what's wrong with both of them; i'm hoping that i can shield the cables somehow and it will work better. otherwise...

I like my 753DF.

One problem I have tho is the antiglare coating has rubbed off around the edges. I have a refurb they exchanged me for my new one which had some geometery problems. The refurb looked like it had something smeared around the extreem edges... nothing which interfered with the picture. Eventually I took a soft cloth to clean it and found the streaked areas getting slightly bigger. It was then that I realized my refurb had teh antiglare coating coming off from around the edges. A few tiny spots have come off from near the bottom. Eventually I will get the thing replaced.
