Looking for a powerful laptop for business and some gaming.

No 1st person shooter type games, mainly racing simulations like Grand Prix 3.

Thanks in advance!

No Sager company web site turns up in a yahoo search

A lot of them use desktop CPU's

I go for brand name laptops, Toshiba, Dell, Compaq, Sony

Sager could decide to fold and you would be out of luck for parts, drivers, and service

Sager's been around almost as long as the companies you listed, and are a good value, and they have good service.

Sager

those p4 look like they're desktop cpus....doesn't that mean the battery life must be pretty crappy?

I wouldnt get a sager, but if you do make sure there is indication that it uses a mobile processor. If there isnt any it probably dosnt, which means it gets hot and has low battery life.

Good-luck
Luden.

Sager is great . My friend jsut got one from here and is very happy.

There is really no Aesthetical or preformance-based difference unless you are aiming for a $6000 laptop...and they even do that

They have upto a 2.2Ghz with a 64MB Radeoe.that one is a desktop processor though..about 1.26 hours with one battery🙁

Here are some of the things you might want to consider (from my experience with Sager 2260V Laptop)

This laptop does not have a plain serial port.

The built-in modem is a winmodem.

Both modem and ethernet use the same jack on the back of the laptop, so you will not be able to use both ethernet and modem at the same time.

The video controller (SIS630S) does not have it's own memory. It uses portion of system memory for a frame-buffer. This means that if you want a laptop to play 3D games, this laptop is not your first choice. And probably not a second choice either. I don't play games on my computers, so I don't care too much about video card performance. Your opinion may be very different.

This laptop has only 1 (ONE) PCMCIA port.

The battery is not hot-swappable. In fact, in order to replace the battery, you need to use a screw driver. Not a nice thing to do in an airplane seat ;-).

The good news is that battery lasts a bit more than 3 hours if you don't do anything CPU intensive. Of course, playing DVD full screen in Windows 98 will drain the battery in under half an hour.

Personally, I wouldn't want to buy another Sager laptop again. As you can see from my signature, I have IBM Thinkpad T23 now since Sager simply wasn't worth the headache and all of the little inconviences I mentioned above.

Those cons apply to certain models, but not all.

Sager is a very popular brand of laptops, just not in the US. They are one of the larger brands in Asia. Very well respected. Typically, you get a lot of features for the money.

As to a mobile processer vs. desktop, Toshiba is using a desktop processor in one of their high-end models right now, so I wouldn't put too much stock in that feature.

For those of worrying about desktop P4's in laptops, I just saw a story in the last few days that Intel has decided to acknowledge the market for desktop chips in laptops and actually support vendors in designing laptops for desktop chips (which they refused to do until now...). I think the .13 micron process finally makes desktop chips in laptops a reasonable solution.

My friend has been trying to get a Sager fixed for 3 months. They send to 3rd party repair facilities, and he has tried 3. <FWIW>

I have a Sager Laptop for 2 1/2 Years and it the best unit I have ever used. I have worked with IBM, Dell & Sony. In my option it's the best laptop for the money. Mine has it's own video memory (4MB) and can play most games listing that as it's limit. It's a Celeron with a DVD, and it last 20 mins on battery when watching a movie, but most laptops are that way. I have had nothing but good results with warranty repair, video cable when bad once, and tech support. Watch what you order with any brand, all of them sell cheap models with shared video memory.

Here is there website: Sager

And if gaming/office work is your needs, I would recommend the
NP 4250 Series, it uses the P3 Mobile CPU & ATI's Mobile Radeon 3D Accelerator with a 32MB DDR memory.

Good luck on your choice.
