Welcome back, Eli!

It's 12/21/12. And it's not necessarily the end of the world according to the Mayans, just the end of the "long count" calendar. It's the galactic alignment, where the winter solstice sun will be aligned with the center of the galaxy. The sun on that day will be aligned exactly with the center of the Milky Way on that night. This happens once every 26,000 years.

This is exciting somehow... I really hope something special happens too... one big moment in a life time >>>> countless dull moments

It's the end of time/end of world according to the Mayan calender.

We are on a collision course with a huge asteroid for that date which is of course my birthday 🙂

I have a chinese friend who's birthday is August 8 and he's going to have a crazy 8/8/8 party (turning 30). I think 8 is a lucky number to chinese people or something.

Yeah, because we need to hope for a cataclysmic event to make your world exciting. Nothing like being egocentric to fill the world with perfection.

"Hey, the world is going to end, but I am happy and not bored for once! Screw the rest of you fools!"

The 2000 "prediction" doesn't really have much basis. If you look at the sophistication of the Mayan astrology, you really have to give this date some credit. The pole shift is going to happen in 2012? It doesn't really have to be the end of the world. Just something significant enough to prove the Mayan will be grand.
The world we live in now is so dull compare to the good old days. Industrial revolution really takes away a lot of the mystic of human civilization.
A pole shift would be virtually transparent to us on the planet. It would not be a catastrophy in any way, shape or form. Further, while a pole shift can happen fast, it can also take hundreds of years. It's a natural part of the Earth's dynamo, has happened countless times since the Earth was formed, and is meaningless to 99% of the world's population.

I don't think it was necessarily stupid to correct myself, just a little cautious. I know there are a lot of bomb-sympathists here.

I think he means "Ckunt"

Maybe I'm wrong, though. 😛

I don't think anything cataclysmic is going to happen that day. There's some conjecture about a sudden pole shift, i.e. where maybe Miami might become the North Pole, but all of that is pretty unlikely and not founded on any actual science (except, yes, the poles have shifted in the past, but there is nothing to correlate a pole shift to the galactic alignment or to suppose that it might happen suddenly).
One theory about the pole shift I heard was that we are crossing the plane of the galactic equator, but IIRC that is not correct. This is purely an observational phenomena caused by the normal precession of the earth's axis. Plus, the galaxy doesn't really have an equator out in our neighborhood, it's thinner than a sheet of paper (relatively).

But yeah, I understand your sentiment. The way I look at it is that the doomsday need is a reflection of the individual's fear of mortality. Kind of a Jim Jones type of thing, i.e. it's easier to face your own death if you know that everyone else is coming with you.

Good job at distorting my argument, apparently I am not the only one excited... And where did I say it would have to be a cataclysmic event? I said "something special"...

I'm just amazed at how well the Mayans were able to predict it's course in their day.

Damn generic batteries!

Quite frankly I don't have much to lose right now in life. I wouldn't mind trading it in for the spectacle of end of world and finally an ancient prophecy comes true.

I really want to see some ancient history breakthrough during my life time.
My most wanted list:
Atlantis!
Hall of records in Egypt
Noah's Ark
The real tomb for Qin Shi Huangdi (China's first emperor)
Some relics of the Statue of Zeus and/or Colossus of Rhodes

oops should be 21st, i passed my bed time.

..the Mayan's figured that would be the year they would run out of virgins to sacrifice thus the end of the world.

Won't happen all fairy tales and I can't wait to toss it in the faces of the wacko's just like I did during the year 2000 new years.
