Are PC games dying?

Guys,

I wanna know if PC games are dying? Hard figures please not just opinions.
I hate consoles -- and I hate how console games are killing PC games. Low res and low graphics -- substandard in my opinion to what i can get on my P4/Athy system w/ a GF4/5.

Right now, PC gaming I believe has hit another golden age. Just check out IGN's reviews. There is atleast a 9 every few games released recently

they better get better copy protection. its just too easy to DL them for free..

i got generals before it was in stores...then went and bought the game like i was planning on doing. i just wanted to get a heads up on the competition online 🙂

Have you tried BF1942 with desert combat mod yet on the PC? It'd make you forget all about the consoles. That is one genre where consoles can't compete. First person shooters. I can't stand playing a FPS without a mouse.

PC games will never go out, console hardware will not be able to keep up. Most of the times the hardware is obsolete before it even goes into production. Console RPGs I must say are better than PCs, but the FPS will always belong to the PC.

I saw a special on discovery channel (and that's the inspiration for my current sig) which say they are dying. They say Stealing the games combined with high poroduction costs is killing the industry. Anyone else see that recently?

pc games will go underground if necessary.

If money can't be made by the big companies then the mod teams/garage developers who don't care about the money as much will really step it up.

I thought games were rivaling the Hollywood movie industry in terms of profit? Or something close to that...

The copy protection argument is bullshit because its easy enough to install a mod chip in any console on the market, and if you can make a 1:1 copy of the game CD you're all set even without a mod chip. Copy protection is no deterrent to even moderatly advanced users.

What I don't get though is that Piracy is HUGE in other countries outside the US.
Look @ Places like China, talk about fruity two shoes.

I agree whole heartedly, if it's a good game the least you can do is BUY THE software and show your support.
😉

but that's the key isn't it. you are better off w/ your own copy if you wanna play online right

They are dying. Console games are more profitable. And now with the XBox, MS is diverting a lot of would-be PC games. And that's only going to get worse in the future. This is really bad news, not only for gamers and game developers, but hardware manufacturers as well. There is more discussion about this in the general PC gaming forum at gonegold.com.

I recently read an article in the San Jose Mercury news about Nvdia's CEO saying that to paraphrase ,was a "big mistake" to pair up with Microsoft. HE said the projections on console gaming were over-done compared to the PC. Nvidia subsequently lost market share to ATI when they transferred engineering resources to the XBOX...............They say they are going back to the PC in full force to compete with ATI. They also said they will have to think long & hard about negotiating for the future Xbox2 contract. One thing is for certain, the CEO said his company won't sacrifice their PC efforts any more.

If that isn't a sign that the PC is here to say, then I don't know what will. The PC will always be relevant as the MOST CUTTING EDGE games will use the PC as the platform of choice. Consoles will always be a step behind the PC in terms of horsepower. I, for one, do my most serious gaming efforts on the PC. The Xbox is just reserved when I have friends over.

Plus, online gaming still is *at* the PC. Always has been, always will be, as a result of the keyboard and mic.

Another reason: THE PC IS FLEXIBLE AND CONFIGURABLE. Not so with consoles.

Plus, most exclusive console games will always hit the PC (like GTA). Competing console gamers will always buy the game to play on the PC. You think PS@ or GC owners aren't buying the "Splinter Cell" iteration for their PCs? Hmm.

Despite the piracy $lop, look how many PCs inhabit this world. It is STILL extremely profitable and competes with the movie industry for entertainment dollars (music has already taken a dive).

Now consider how many gaming consoles there are. The PC will never be absolete. Every version of a console *will* be absolete after a few years.......then......again, you'll have to splurge for the next generation console to keep up with the latest and greatest games. Consumers will tire of this ***console hardware investment *** when their old consoles have no more new games being developed for it like the Dreamcast.

It seems that way to me. There used to be new need for speed versions out all the time, now we hardly get any, and the latest one is pure crap on the PC as it's optimized for the PS2. Then we have midtown madness, a marvel of a game, for which the third version has no plans for a PC release. Damn MS and their crappy xbox.

Well, you guys have to realize that while high-end PCs grossly outperform consoles, older computers (or those without decent video cards) are real shady when it comes to gaming. Most of us at AT - with our sexy rigs 😛 - take it for granted that most home PCs aren't equipped to handle even q3 at 1024x768. Also realize that consoles will eventually catch up to computers in terms of image quality. The main problem right now is the limitation of standard TVs. Anybody ever seen the Xbox running a game on an HDTV set at 720p? It's actually very impressive. I hear there are even 1080i games out.
