I think my pioneer 10x DVD ROM is dieing on me (see below)....the cheapest replacement I can find is the 8x Panasonic drive, does anyone know if this drive is any good?

Edit: There is also an LG 12x for not much more...but I'd prefer the Panasonic... <and a new title>

My pioneer 6x is also giving me lots of problems. What kind of problems are you having with yours? I think mine is dying to. I would also like to know if Panasonic makes good dvd drives.

I'm not sure if it's dieing...now it seems ok....

It was making weird clicking noises and not copying from CDs very fast...

Then I went to watch a movie and it was making the same kind of clicking noises and the movie was very choppy....(yes DMA is enabled...)

Now about an hour later I try to watch the movie and it seems fine....

It's a 104S Slot Load 10x....I dunno it's been giving me some problems lately....

The Panasonic 8x is nice and cheap where I am, but I've used lots of Panasonic electronics in the past and it was great....my 15" moniotr, my friends 17", a VCR, a stereo reciever.....Panasonic's electronics have been top notch for me....I just don't have any experience with their PC stuff....

I've got the 10x Pioneer tray loading DVD and it's showing the same symptoms. It especially has troubles with CDRs (makes those weird clicking noises). Sometimes it won't read the disk at all, and I have to reinsert it and pray that it will eventually read.

Although, it's been doing this to me for some time now, and I'm not sure if it's the drive that's dying or if it's supposed to do this. It hasn't given me any troubles with DVD and only a few with pressed CDs.

I'm hoping mine doesn't get any worse

Are Toshiba dvd drives pretty good? Where is a website that sells the Toshiba dvd drives?

I have a Panasonic 8X DVD and it is an excellent drive. I have used a lot of Panasonic drives and they are top notch. However I recently found out that some Panasonic drives (8/4/32 CD-RW) are not completely designed by them and they are not as good quality.

Yeah now that I think about it, I think CDRs are the worst...but hell when I first got the drive (roughly a year ago) it was great...CDRs, CDRWs, whatever...it didn't care...

So you say the Panasonic 8x DVD is pretty good MWink? It's nice and cheap to...hopefully my DVD Rom is ok...I just won't use it to read CDRs I guess...and only that once did it have issues with playing a DVD...

But at least I know I can get a Panasonic DVD relatively cheap if it does go out on me.

I've been looking for Toshiba...but I prefer to buy local if I can and the Panasonic 8x is low cost.

Thanks for the input guys

Here's another vote for Toshiba. Both of my DVD drives are Toshiba. They have never let me down.

Yes, I would highly recommend the Panasonic DVD-ROM. I no longer recommend the Panasonic CD-RW since it is not really a Panasonic drive. Hitachi DVDs are also good except the one I had was extremely loud. I DO NOT recommend Toshiba! I have used a large number of their drives and most of them performed poorly and failed quickly.

creative makes an OK 6X for mad cheap (99CDN), but oddly enough, i found an 8X panasonci selling for 79CDN....which is possibly the best bang/buck i've ever seen on a DVD drive...

haven't heard any complains about panasonic drives - seem to be relatively solid drives...

my 5X creative is decent, although it takes a couple sec. to register audio cds for some odd reason...

and lg make good drives too...if the 12x is hardly more than the 8x panasonic, get the lg...

Another plug for the toshibadrives. I got my 1502 from googlegear. If you backup your software with CloneCD, it's the reader rated best too.

Have you guys tried a cd cleaner cd or something? possible that your laser is dirty and it's trying to get a better read... BTW if you smoke around your pc or have such around your pc... that's not such a good idea.. cause tobacco is sticky and will not come off with a cd cleaner...
