Are my temps too high?

Hi.

At idle its about:

CPU temp: 39 C/ 107 F
MB temp: 42 C/ 107 F

Load:

CPU : 70C / 158 F

MB: 46C / 114 F

I tested using Stress Prime 2004.

I am using stock cooling and heat sink, are these temps safe.

Yes, it's a little toasty. With a decent after market heat-pipe sink that would be in the high 50s at least.
There is a thread over in the GH Forum, "What are your CPU temps". Might want to read it.

not for a p4, if its prescott ive seen there max temp close to 85c so you shouldnt be to worried, i have a similar chip at its at 70c after games and its fine

I just cleaned my PC last night.

Do you think i should get a after market heat-pipe sink?

Any way i can lower temps in my PC.

Those temps are "safe" but if you're running at load often you should get better cooling.

I got a Zalman 9500 recently for my 3.0E (oc 3.3), I'm idling at 31c, load at 42-43c. I've OC'd to 3.9 for fun and benchmarking and topped out at around 48-50c.

EDIT: FYI SpeedFan clocks my chipset temp higher (35c) than my CPU at idle. Can't always trust software readings, but I think that tells you a lot about the 9500.

I found out Why my case was so hot:

Pic 1

Pic 2

These are pics of the front of my case.

The reason why its hot is cause i have a fan in the front as intake and since there is no holes it doesn't push a lot of air and the little air that it does push is HOT!!!:|

The only way i can fix this is if i cut this OUT!!!

After i do that i'll mod the front like THIS.

That seems like the only thing i can do, cause right now as i am wrinting this i have the side of my case open, so atleast it will get some cool air.

If you guys have any ideas please let me know, i don't know what else to do.

Thanks for the help.

Any thing else i could do, i don't want to buy another case until my next build, which is prob gonna be at late DEC 2006 or JAN 2007.

I think you're one the right track, as long as you're good with power tools. Otherwise the cuts are going to be uneven and look pretty crappy.

Another idea, one that will take a lot less time and you won't have to be as precise, is to cut a large chunk out of the bottom of the front bezel. It's out of the way so you won't have to look at any shoddy craftsmanship, and will provide enough fresh air with an intake fan (as long as the case has feet that lift it 1/2-1 inch off the ground.

Quick Sketch: Cut out area in red. If there are important mounting points in the area, don't cut those off.

I had slight temperature problems. It wasn't really a problem, but my comps temps were getting to high for my liking. I was too lazy to deal with adding a fan, so i just bought and external fan at walmart for 7 dollars and it dropped my cpu/mobo temps 5-10 degrees celsius. :p

I have thought about that.....but tell me somthing what if i do what you said and i cut the front like i thought was the only solution, would there be alot of noise?

If you cut the front (where you were originally going to), there will be more noise since the source (intake fan) will be more exposed, and facing you. If you go with my idea, you should hear less noise since the exposed area will be facing down.

The amount of noise increase will depend on how loud your fan is in the first place. Worry about the cooling first, then if you need to, get a quieter intake fan.

BTW, what are your temps now that your case is open?

EDIT: Also, cut out any metal grille that's in front of your intake fan (on the case wall, not the bezel).

Necro, you could try replacing the stock HSF with an aftermarket solution. I just installed a Scythe Samurai Z on a friend's P4 Prescott that used to idle at 44C and hit over 70C on load; the system now idles at 39C and loads at 53-54C with Prime 95. These are at a room temperature of about 24C (case temp = 30C). The case in an Antec that has no intake fans- the front is almost identical to the case from the link you provided to casemodgod.com; there is a single 120mm exhaust fan in the rear going at about 1100 rpm.

The entire install took about 20 minutes, and most of the time was spent cleaning off the old TIM and putting on AS Ceramique. No motherboard removal necessary, nothing to screw in, no tools involved. The new HSF is also very quiet compared to stock (no fan throttling).

I just went into the BIOS and there was a setting for the CPU fan:

It was set so the allowed temp was 75 C: WTF:|

So i lowered it to 54 C, i think this setting is: the max amount of heat the cpu can take befor the fan goes faster.

And since it was set to 75 C and when i would hit 70 C the fan would only spin faster for a while then after about 35 to 40 min it would come back down to 39 which was my lowest CPU temp ever,....Well thats until now.

(After i Increased the speed of my CPU fan, it basicly speeds up the fan when my CPU temp gets high, which cools the cpu a lot better)

At idle its about:

CPU temp: 35 C/ 107 F
MB temp: 38 C/ 100 F

Load: Test for mem

CPU : 40C / 104 F

MB: 48C / 107 F

I tested using Stress Prime 2004.

Also by doing this my PC is a little faster strange if you think about it, i gained a cooler CPU and a faster PC overall.

By the way i ran the test for over an hour and it only peaked once at :

MB: 48C / 107 F

@ necro, what exact setting did you change in BIOS because I'm having the same problem with my pentium 530 running at high temps and planned to buy an aftermarket heatsink. If this solution helped you, it might just help me as well.

Appreciate your time posting the instructions ;)

Depends on the motherboard, but it's usually under a bios tab that says "Hardware Monitoring"

I have an ASUS P5GDC-deluxe which runs the same BIOS as necro's P5GD1 (sorry I didn't mention that earlier), so I wanted to make sure I do the right thing... I'll wait for necro to reply :)

np, figured it out - you're right, it was under power > hardware monitor - was able to drop the CPU target temperature to 51º c ;)
