Are my antivirus reviews really that bad?

Sounds like the average fanboy chatter......I wouldent pay it anymind. Im using you recommended AntiVir (coming from NAV and McAfee) and Im happy.

I wouldn't worry about it. They're jumping to conclusions way too fast because they're very defensive about their product of choice. Just remember even bad publicity is good publicity - they linked to you which will increase incoming hits from their site as well as add an inbound link in Google's index (page rank increase).

just do what one of the posters said was wrong:
ok, let me see.

- spelled Avast wrong (aVast)
- No date of testing
- no info about the system the test was performed on
- not mentioning what version of Avast was tested
- not mentioning the settings that where used when testing
- not mentioning if anything else was running during the test
- not mentioning how many files (archives) are on the test system
- definatly not reading the help
- refering to others for detection rate, not checking theirselfs
- not mentioning they tested the home version (you can make it up if you look at they saying "got the key from the website, but people who don´t know that will not know if it is the home/proversion)
- not mentioning anything about the differences between home/pro
- 30.112MB Sure did not have had his glasses on when looking
- 30.112Mb, likely take from taskmanger which is not accurate when it comes to giving ram usage.
- mentioning detection rate of Pro, not mentioning it is the same for Home

I am VERY thankful for your reviews. You may not be perfect, but at least you went out and did something. None of those jokers went out of their way to make a better review, so to me, their opinion means jack. But I would take the above criticism and make your review even better. Although the guy says you spelled Avast wrong and then proceeds to use the so-called wrong spelling everywhere else.

I was just thinking this same thing. It's funny how they pull out the "self proclaimed..." line, but at the same time are all acting as though they are experts by cutting down incorrect capitalization as bad spelling. I salute Shad for his efforts, it is a very cool thing to do and will most definately be a great thing to have on a resume. I know that anyone here would be a good reference for any sort of employment in the future. I also think it's great that he (Shad) does this sort of thing as a hobby...such a good break from all the hobbyist gaming sites (and much more productive 😀)

After reading Schadenfroh's reviews, I uninstalled Avast (aVast, whatever) and installed BitDefender free edition. Ran it once, and it found some trojans undetected by Avast.

So, I think the reviews are on the money. 🙂

How often did you run definition updates for avast?

Agreed, and am switching from AVG to AntiVir as well

wow, how did you even read through that thread. my head was aching after trying to translate the post by the "avast! translator".

If the user use the program will know the stupid things talked:

hmmm, perhaps we need a new translator.

FYI, did you read the part about BitDefender Free edition not having real time protection?

I enjoy your articles are reviews....they're probably just looking for something to b!tch about. Stick with ATSF. 😉

I've enjoyed your articles, antivirus reviews, and adware cleanup writings.
You helped me with a hijackthis log.
I have installed Kaspersky on two computers here at home on your word. I'm about to change from NAV to Kaspersky on my own computer, as well.
I, for one, appreciate both your time and opinions.
I'm sure you've made more than one positive impact 😀

I don't know, as soon as I read "spelled Avast wrong (aVast)", I knew that person and anyone agreeing with him on that stupid board were pretty much 'tards.

😉

The minute you called it a "Review", you raised the standards. If you called it "Shadenfroh's experiences with antivirus programs", you would be ok with the random collection of information.

I think that all of those are very good criticism, especially the spelling. If you can't spell the name of the product right (or take the time to capitilize the correct character), what reason do people have to beleive that you took the time to do anything else correctly?

You definetly need to include the versions / file definitions date, and the exact test setup.

Personally, I'd never use your review to make any type of business decision. I do think it is somewhat usefull as a source of information.

Take it not as condemntation of you, but ways to improve your review.

I know a lot of administrators that swear up and down that Symantec is the best. I ask them if they've ever managed or used another vendor's antivirus... nope. 😛
