Someone said my scores seemed low

I just got a 9800 pro, here is my setup:

Motherboard: Soltek NV400-L64 Nforce-2
Athlon XP 2500+ @ 3200+
512 MB Crucial PC2700
Radeon 9800 Pro
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Case/PSU:Antec 1080 AMG 430w Truepower

3Dmark 2003: 5465
3Dmark 2001: 15829

My old score with the 8500 was:
3dmark 03 - 1461
3dmark 01 - 8383

Yeah looks about right... thats the scores a couple of systems had in PC Mag... same spec too... 3200+ and 9800 Pro.

My brother has a 2100+@ 2.42GHz and a stock 9800 Pro... just scored 5542.

Hmm

I wonder where you are getting that extra 2k or so... The nforce board I am using is the single channel, however if you read the anandtech review you will see it performs as well as dual, falling behind only in some "In truly demanding workstation applications". Which is utterly meaningless to me as a gamer.

My crucial Ram is not as nice as yours, but it IS running at 200mhz FSB no problem.

What do you think? I would appreciate some advice.

Also, I isntalled the new mobo, as well as the video card on a dirty old install of windows. I had to run the repair setup and it worked, but its been bugging and it's felt sluggish. I am at this moment sending my backup data over to another PC on my network and then I am going to wipe this thing clean and start fresh. I will see if that makes any difference at all.

dont use 3dmark 2K1 to guage your vidoe card performance. That benchmark is a whole system bench.

Use 3dmark2K3 to compare with other 9800's. that test is more GPU dependant.

I'd say your figures are reasonable. I had a similar power setup via P4 2.4ghz, 9700pro, 512mb PC1066, and ran in the 14ks for 3dmark2001

It seems a bit low in 3dmark2k1. I get the same in my 9700Pro stock in Barton2500@2800 and 512pc2700 value ram. What drivers are using?

I realize I just did a lot of testing with 3DMark... but... don't put too much faith in those... drivers change my score by 2000+ points. Until there's actually some DX9 games on the market, 3DMark2003 is kinda useless. So... 3DMark2001 is a bit more useful... however, real games are most useful. I'll be posting my scores in my profile soon... I'm just taking some time to find the best GPU/memory settings. Can't wait till the 51.75 drivers go gold so I can get a little more speed out of my RAM... the 45.23's won't let me go as high even though I don't get any artifacts or tearing.

No it's not... you just reinstall the old drivers.

Ram timings make a big difference. You are probably at Cas 2.5-3-3-6 or so. Cas 2-2-2-6 would get you 500-1000 more points.
If you want to see if operating system optimization is also holding you back, run Spybot, AdAware, and Regcleaner. Then run msconfig and select "diagnostic startup" before you do 3DMark01. That will run only the basics of your operating system. If your score is a lot higher after this, check out Tweaktown's operating system optimization guide.

The key is your RAM Timings!

I was getting scores in the 3200's with my Radeon 9700Pro before I decided to check my RAM timings. I am running 1 - 512MB stick of PC3200 Corsair XMS on an ASUS P4P800-D. The timings were at 2-3-3-6 and after I changed the timing to 2-2-2-6... My score immediately jumped to 4762! I know that it could be faster since I'm bottlenecking my system by not running another stick of RAM in Dual Channel Mode, but the score is pretty decent for a stock system and 1 stick of RAM. I'll be getting that extra 512MB stick soon... I'll let you know if that helps out the score anymore.

Still hard to believe that something that simple could make such a big difference....
