Are most New Yorkers really assholes?

I just watched Borat again for the second time and was pretty amused at how pissed off the New Yorkers got when Borat tried to approach them. I always thought it was a stereotype that New Yorkers were cold and unfriendly......is this really the case?

I visited New York last year and it wasn't really that bad. Just don't try to talk to stranger or approach anyone randomly.

YES, they are.

(that yes was a resounding YES).

People in NY are total rat bastards.

I'm from NY and I'm a nice guy (at least I think I am). :) I think it might be the cold weather.

I will tell you what I find funny. New Yorkers are definitely assholes, when they are in New York, but get them alone in another state and they are not.

I think that most people would be very put off and offended if a random strange looking man tried to kiss and hug them. People fear what they don't know. Even someone like myself would be...concerned.

Maybe he should have went as Bruno for a warmer response :)

I don't think it's just New Yorkers... I automatically assume that any total stranger who walks up to me on the street is after something.

Why would you approach a random stranger?

Why would you approach a random stranger?

How else would you get to the illegal mahjong tables in the back?

New Yorkers in South Florida certainly are assholes, and most NY/NJ people are assholes on the phone.

I'll just add this to the list of reasons why I don't live in the states.

I think it's just that there's such an influx of different cultures in NY. What's friendly in one culture can be hostile in another and uncouth in a third, so people here have learned to mind their own for fear of making cultural faux pas. This can be seen as unfriendliness by people from elsewhere in the states where you can safely be friendlier. I remember driving to FL for spring break and some girls just walking up to us and saying hi in South Carolina at a fast food restaurant, my friends and I were just like... Uh, do we know you?

No. They're rude, and they'll tell you if they don't like you, by the New Yorkers I've met were friendly and genuine once I started to actually talk to them.
