I'm not sure about the percentage of unemployment in America but I do know that most of them would rather work less hours for more money if they had a choice. The benefit of working for someone else vs working for yourself is very minimal imho. A form of slavery that hasn't changed much since the 1800's
My point is why help someone profit so they can provide food, clothing and living expensives for you when you can do so much better being in business for yourself and make more then enough for all those living expenses? The majority are so dependent on jobs (slavery), that without it, they would be homeless immediately. like bondage, some even enjoy working their whole life at minimum wages! Now, that's what I call a very smart sheep. 🙂 it's exactly like this in japan too.

PS:This dude, a foreigner at my work say he's working for god! and not for the company even thought he is employed by the company to mop the floor@12.00 an hour. He has a contract with them and it guaranteed his hourly wages, good for him. land of the free? land of the opportunity? Only true only if you enjoy being enslaved by big corporates who cares nothing about our health problems related to tobacco(nicotine addiction) and alcohol (alcoholism). spends more money on advertising (brainwashing the mass) then even paying their employee, hence the minimum wages for foreigner employee!
 
hmm i live in a farming community. i can't think of one lazy person at all. they all work from sundown to sunup if needed. many have farms PLUS other full time jobs. so no i do not think Americans are lazy.

I used to own a farm. hardest work i have ever done (at least untile i had a child).

I was blessed in the fact that my grandfather left me a good deal of money. so i didnt have to work all that hard. But others around here have not only a 40+ hour work week they then turn around and tend to the fields they own.

the people around where i live are some of the hardest workign people i have ever known.

no kidding, I was once told (don't know if true or not) that most europeans get an average of 4-6 weeks vacation a year :Q, I've been dreaming of finishing my 6th year so I can step up from 2 to 3weeks vacation.
 
China instituted a nationwide holiday. I think it lasts 5 days or something. It's supposed to help stimulate the economy through tourism.

I dont think it's a matter of hours works. It's more like what do Americans do while they're at work. Me? I'm browsing the Web half the time.

I was actually talking about this with an American coworker of mine, so we set out to secretly observe all our non American coworkers. Couldn't catch them goofing off a single time. It's amazing how much work Indian people in the IT field do while they're at work. Walk around the office and you see all the Americans browsing the Web or chatting with each other. Hilarious.
 
Voted no ( I work my butt off: 12 hr nights plus OT). However, there does seem to be a large amount of people (and growing) who seem to have no problem living off government (taxpayer) support. What would be interesting to know, is how many of those taxpayers would elect to NOT continue supporting those people, if they had the choice to do so.

Yes, but no more than the average person from other nations. Compare, for example, france, where the average work week is around 90 minutes and unemployment levels hover around 80% 🙂
 
No. But there're differences in priorities. In my observation, generally speaking, American married adults(especially males) value spending time with their families more than their counterparts(ex: Japanese). If you want to measure laziness in terms of hours worked, and you include Europe into the mix, then the Americans would come out ahead of the average, in my experience.
