Are LCDs Ready For Gaming?

I need to get a new monitor and I am not sure if I should just get another CRT or make the jump to LCD. The Dell 2001FP has a response time of 16 ms.
Will that be fast enough for gaming or should I just wait a till next time I upgrade in 2 or so years?

Try a fast response LCD at a gaming PC in a store or check out a buddy's. I think the faster LCDs today are fine.

I think you can still get an Awesome CRT that that costs much less.

I have a Planar PX191 19" and it's fine for gaming too. But, the hardcore gamers go for CRTs, low-response 17in LCD's, or the new Dell 20".

My 18" Dell 1800FP is a prime gaming LCD. Even though the paper specs look kind of weak, it offers zero ghosting and a wide viewing angle w/ excellent contrast. I'm sure everyone else with an 1800FP will also agree with my assessment.

I love my Samsung 181T, awesome for games, very little to no gohsting with an excellent feature set...I believe Dell used these panels in the 1800FP's...but I may be incorrect on that.

uhhh, they've been ready for more than 2 years. i've been playing UT2003 on my 1701fp and it's beautiful. sure it's more expensive than a crt but trust me, once you've owned an LCD you'll never go back to a crt.

Absolutely! I still don't understand why the actual performance of this monitor is so much better than the specs?

My LCD only catches fire in 1 out of every 4 gaming attempts.

BTW, I'm glad VIAN doesn't come to general hardware...

If you are a true gamer, a CRT will still win, hands-down.. but the best thing, is for you to go down to a hardware shop - check out the LCDs, and if you think that they are good enough, then they are good enough.

the LCD in my lappy is fine for the gaming i do (1st and 3rd person games and driving games).

As long as you get a quality LCD they are great for gaming. I game frequently (mix of FPS, RTS, and flight sims mainly) and my 192t is great. I prefer it to the 21" CRTs I have (I still have both my Mitsubishi 2040u and Sony G520p). So I think people that say serious gamers only use CRTs is misleading. Some do sure, but I prefer my LCD to the two high end 21" CRTs I have. I am not buying CRTs anymore.

It depends. First off I can only speak for my Samsung 192t. The native res for mine is 1280x1024. I of crouse try to run everything at that res. However, some games don't support it and I have to run 1280x960. It still looks fine at that res. I have an old game that only runs at 800x600 though, that one looks bad. So it sort of depends on what other res you run at. 1280x960 and 800x600 are the only two other ones I have had to try. One looked fine, the other did not.

getting close if you choose faster lcds and buy fast hardware capable of rendering at native resolution. just involves plenty $$$$$

man I am a serious gamer, and an LCD rocks, the only thing I dislike bout this "old" hercules (prophetview 720) is that the black is really bright, which is very annoying when watching movies. (the black bars on top and bottom of screen) so I prolly will go CRT next time because it also has to serve as a TV for me.

Gonna take the plunge and the space savings. I have a 9800XT in my rig and I ordered the Dell 2001FP from a deal in the Hot Deals forum.

I love my LCD, I'll never go back to CRTs. The amount of eyestrain from CRTs is what keeps me away.
