I hate carrying around a big clunky discman and a wallet of CDs if I want to listen to something different. So having the ability to play and store all of my music in one rather small device makes it well worth it.

I spent $330 on the 2nd Gen. iPod in late February and it was well worth it.

It all depends on what you want to use it for. If you don't mind your discman/CDs, then don't bother.

i chose to get the iriver ihp100 instead... more money but it's worth it for:

a company that i know takes care of their customers (when i got my slimx 350 the price went down a few months later, and they sent me a gift certificate for the difference... no where did they say they were going to do this, it was totally unexpected)

fm radio with recording to come in future firmware updates (not vaporware... they are fairly good about firmware updates)

mp3 recording

lcd remote... this one is pretty big since i don't like havling to pull the player out of my pocket all the time.

and longer battery life... twice as long!

you can get it for 365 at compuplus.com... i'll post a thread when i get my baby :)

Unfortunately you are both horribly wrong. The Ipod is very much worth it, provided you will use it a lot. I run with mine everyday (using the case my mom sewed up), as well as listening to it in the car. It works perfect.

Idealy i would like to put each album in a folder, then make playlists taking songs from each folder, but still be able to play each folder as a playlist

I may be misunderstanding you, but the Ipod can do that. If you browse to an album and let it play, it will essentially be using that album as a playlist. Just add songs to the On-The-Go playlist to make a playlist consisting of songs from different albums.

*I apologize for using the word playlist so much*

pros:
nice size
small, lightweight
backlight screen
lots of storage (10,15,30)

cons:
OVERPRICED
too much hype...it is just a hard drive with a screen...
doesnt support all the formats I would like to have supported (WMA, etc...)

overall, I would give it a 6.5-7/10. Why? It's too overpriced for the most part, and 2nd, it doesn't support many formats...

Ameesh, I can't believe you didn't mention the most glaring drawback...it doesn't support wma! :disgust:

thats a huge drawback for me but most people here use mp3 or ogg or whatever non-ms technology they can get there hands on.

Half the time I forget I'm carrying it... it's smaller than a deck of cards, and probalby just as light. Hold two cd cases in your hand, and if that is heavy, you need to get out and move and stop sitting at your computer. I'm sure you'd think the Zen is lighter right? Ha. Go put a brick in your pocket and its like the Zen.

BTW: I hate Macs :) hehe Ipods are amazing though, if you are going to school, you should be able to get a student discount. I got my 10gig for 250 from Dell however.

wtf? No actually I'm not a fat ass. I do a lot of exercise.............

Anything more then 200g will tend to pull that shirt pocket down/ trouser pocket. My MD weights about 80g. Checked the site it is 158g, that is for the 10 and 15gb one. The 30gb one is 6.2 ounces. That is too heavy for my liking. I would prefer it to be less then 100g. When I meant pull your pocket down it is enough weight to make your pocket pull down. If it was lighter it wouldn't pull down so much.

The lack of LCD remote is a big failure for me. I'm use to having an LCD remote.

I expect more when I pay more. To me the 2nd Gen 20gb wasn't good enough for me.

3rd Gen 30gb
4.1" is too high
2.4" that is a fine width
0.73" is too thick for my liking still. When it gets nearer 0.5" and has a lower hight and a LCD remote I would be all over that :D

I didn't say I didn't like it but it had some pit falls that I did not like in the 2nd Gen model and still soem in the 3rd Gen one.

Apples to apples my friend, apples to apples (pardon the pun).. The ipod is the LIGHTEST, smallest, sleakest hard drive player in the market.. Yes, there are lighter flash players out there and, yes, some minidisc players are lighter and smaller.. But NO player with as much storage as the iPod is smaller or lighter.. yet...

Yeah I know apples to apples.

BUT all I care about is a small portable device which has the features I want; it plays music, has lcd remote, 20hrs+ battery life, less then 100g.

I really DON'T care what format it is as long as it plays music. solid state, hd memory player, MD etc. As long as it plays music and has a fast transfer then I am bought.

Oh yeah I also thought that the 2nd Gen iPod headphone 3.5mm jack was in a REALLY crap design. The jack stuck out another half an inch out of the player and was suspectible to having pressure put on. You see a lot of other walkman/ discman with the 3.5mm jack made horizontally instead of put vertically. Much safer and reduces the base size of it. But glad they sorted this out.

Again I don't hate the iPod and think it is great but doesn't have all the features for me. I'll see what the 4th Gen one has to offer :D

Not worth it to me. I could fit all the music I like onto a single mp3 cd 4 times.

BTW: I never mentioned you being a fatass ;) That was your words not mine. I mentioned wearing pants too big for you ... then sure, a deck of cards COULD pull your pants down (pockets down, same difference) but the point being, I own a 3rd gen 10gig Ipod, the best thing I've purchased (besides my oakleys :) hehe). It in NO WAY pulls your pockets down. My wallet is likely heavier than the ipod, my old cellphone (not my new(er) one) was heavier than the ipod, and these are things that you cannot feel in your pocket. With the ipod in my pocket I have no idea it is there... it is completely slim and light. BTW: Sure there are solid state players that allow you to have 6 songs and weight a FRACTION of the ipod, I'll give you that. However, I can store 10gigs... tell me how many of your solid state players you'd have to carry to come to that kinda space (not song amount, lame argument). As for your MD player, that's no better, really, than a slim discman, it might weight less, the point being is you have discs, which you have to carry around extra. So that is also out of the question for someone looking for storeage of a lot of music for without swaping any kind of disc.

Trust me, my friend looked at the ipod and he picked it up and said "Damn this is heavy!" I gave him two DUAL CD cases with CDs, asked him if it was heavy, and he said "No." , now since these were duals, they weight a bit more than a single... which 2 singles is about the weight of an Ipod...
The ipod is light, great navigation, clean looking, and very very slim, you will hardly notice it.

Yes they are quite expensive, and I do think a little over priced, but you do get what you pay for. There is a lot of cases where you get what you pay for, and this is definately one of them.

Edit: Spelling
Edit 2: Not sure what my point was about the friend/CD cases thing... something about it being light and not being able to notice the ipod... mabye it didn't come out that way, so I'll leave it there and repeat my point here. Hehe.

I got an 3rd gen 30gb ipod in that last dell deal. It was cool until I started to get busy, and didn't have the time to really use it... It sat for about 2 weeks, I go to try to use it. It starts playing a song, flickers, restarts. I try to charge it, wait for it to say it's done charging. Hours later, it says it's charged. Take it out, use it for about a half hour poof, dies. what a piece of junk, I've had it for about 2-3 months, used it till the battery died(which would take awhile, this was light use, about 3-4 hours at a time at most), charged it till it said it was full.

Now I gotta get the battery replaced already?!? I looked up and it costs about 160 bucks to send it in to have it replaced, this better be covered under warranty, it should have lasted a lot longer then this!

err where did you find this? Last time i checked 128mb of ram and 120GB HDD + wireless network card was > 200

Its not worth it when there are other products that are the same, way MUCH less.

Wait for the Nomad Juebox Zen NX, which has a removeable battery (not some hack designed by a third party because apple couldn't care less). It's a tad larer, but for about $150 less, its definitely worth it. I'll be buying the 30g for less than your "3rd generation" (is this star trek?!) 15g.

personally I wish I hadn't bought it. There are a lot of other nice players out there, that may not be as nice looking, have a great interface, or be as small. But they are a lot cheaper with a lot more features built in.

but you do get what you pay for.

Actually, Apple products are one of the PRIME examples where you DON'T get what you pay for. And that's why apple is falling down the tubes.

The Ipod is indeed the smallest and lightest, but that is an incomplete statement. By how much?? And then, you see, that it isn't miles above the rest of the pack, as you try to claim. You are paying an extra $150-200 for a square inch difference AND less storage for the dollar. That's NOT what I place under the proverb "getting what you pay for". For an extra inch, I'd rather buy double the space for less money. Compare the 30g Zen NX with the 15g Ipod. Which is cheaper? You are just justifying the purchase to yourself. Dude, you bought a brand name, and you know it.

most of you folks came to anandtech because of your desire to build your own pcs, and not to be the tool that buys a Staples Hewlett Packard. And now, you defend sleek styling as a purchase point worth an extra $200? Hilarious.

You sir, have no clue, because you don't own either do you? No, I thought not. You've likely not even used either of them, and are judging based on your ideal of creative being superior to apple. I hate apple and I know that isn't true. Apple isn't falling down the tubes, much to my dismay, I'd love to see thier computers go by the wayside... (they can keep producing ipods however) ... you have no idea what you are talking about.

By how much? How much lighter does a couple grams feel when you are carrying it around? Why not use those old phones that were like army commando phones, or howbout getting a ligher phone? A few grams make a large difference in weight when the item is so small. Yeah get the Zen, first you get Creatives AMAZING support, right, creative went down the crapper years ago and has sucked ever since... then you get a brick, woo hoo! I'd rather carry around a deck of cards compared to a brick... the weight difference is amazing. Dude you are a troll and you know it. People buy the Zen when the ONLY care about space, rather than actual USE of the item. The Zen is nothing something I want to carry around in my pocket, the ipod, I can carry and not even realize I have it. The zen is a brick, a brick with much more storage space. I didn't pay for a name, you are paying for a name... you in your little world, believe that the creative zen is better than the ipod but when you compare the two, it is obvious the ipod wins in everything exept storage space per dollar. But then again, the ipods are here, while your zen is not.
Go buy your zen, oh wait, you can't, so you can keep waiting. How many posts do I see people say "Wait for the zen" ... wait, it's been at least 6 months, as thats how long I've had my ipod and I was considering one long before that. Idiot. Keep waiting for the mythical zen :)

Oh, came to anandtech because I didn't want an HP? My ass, I've built PCs for the last 12 years. I was 8 then buddy... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to build a PC, ok, maybe for you, but not everyone is you.

yea i'd much rather have an ipod than buy anything from creative. they make you wait in a download queue to download drivers for god's sake! what the hell kind of customer support is that... and don't get me started about their buggy software. it's about the same level as real.

of course ihp-100 > *, mine's coming in a few days :)
