Are Ipods really worth it?

I have a discman that i bought a couple of years ago for like 120$ thats doing fine for me with burned cd's but I was looking at an ipod recently. The only problem is that they are verry expensive. Are they realy worth it? I'm looking at a 3rd gen 15GB model.... But I live in canada so it's like 600$ here and i'm trying to justify the cost.

i dont think so, i would say go play with it, many people love the interface i thought it was ok. fairly intuitive but the touchpad thing seemed flakey.

i personally would not spend my money on it.

i wouldnt, those things are way overpriced. as for it lasting a life time, i think CF, SD, etc will evolve faster than micro hard drives. Solid state is always the better way to do it. but one of my friends did get an Ipod and yes, it does kick butt. but like i said, its overpriced

Ameesh, I can't believe you didn't mention the most glaring drawback...it doesn't support wma! :disgust:

I picked up a 15gig 3rd gen two weeks or so ago. Absolutely worth every penny imo. Although, if you don't have a good amount of Mp3's or you're not going to use it much then it's probably not worth it. Mine get's used almost it's full battery life (8+ hours) every day though so for me I can't beat it.

I had an iPod but didn't care for the controls too much. It also just seemed so delicate that I had to be very careful not to damage it. I currently have a Samsung YP-55V. 256MB, FM tuner, voice recording, Line-In recording (great for recording concerts) all in a tiny little stick. Plus I can control it without even looking at it.

The only thing i hate about the ipod is how it works off of playlists only. You cant have your own directory structures, it makes it for you. Idealy i would like to put each album in a folder, then make playlists taking songs from each folder, but still be able to play each folder as a playlist. Currently the ipod only allows you to play songs off playlists, and all teh songs are stored in its own directory structure.

No LCD on the remote that sucks.
The size of it. It is still too long and thick for my liking.
battery that you can not take out. I foresee it getting problems in the future as no battery can avoid decreased holds after hundres of charges.
Too heavy. It pulls your pocket down too much.

I had one for a month then I decided to sell it. 2nd Gen 20Gb iPod.

I'd never buy one. Don't think I'd use it much. I usually only listen to music in my car and that's why I got a MP3 head unit.

Ipods are well worth the money, don't listen to Koing, he must wear pants 40 sizes too big for himself, otherwise it wouldn't "pulls your pockets down" ... put it in your pocket and you can't even feel it. Half the time I forget I'm carrying it... it's smaller than a deck of cards, and probalby just as light. Hold two cd cases in your hand, and if that is heavy, you need to get out and move and stop sitting at your computer. I'm sure you'd think the Zen is lighter right? Ha. Go put a brick in your pocket and its like the Zen.

BTW: I hate Macs 🙂 hehe Ipods are amazing though, if you are going to school, you should be able to get a student discount. I got my 10gig for 250 from Dell however.

LOVE my 2nd gen 10 gigger.. Would like WMA support but AAC support is good enough for now (I hope they support OGG soon).. I would say go for it but remember that Rio has a potential iPod killer coming out next month - it's $399 but may be worth the wait.. Let me find a link.. looking for link.. Looking for link.. Rio Karma

wtf? No actually I'm not a fat ass. I do a lot of exercise.............

Anything more then 200g will tend to pull that shirt pocket down/ trouser pocket. My MD weights about 80g. Checked the site it is 158g, that is for the 10 and 15gb one. The 30gb one is 6.2 ounces. That is too heavy for my liking. I would prefer it to be less then 100g. When I meant pull your pocket down it is enough weight to make your pocket pull down. If it was lighter it wouldn't pull down so much.

The lack of LCD remote is a big failure for me. I'm use to having an LCD remote.

I expect more when I pay more. To me the 2nd Gen 20gb wasn't good enough for me.

3rd Gen 30gb
4.1" is too high
2.4" that is a fine width
0.73" is too thick for my liking still. When it gets nearer 0.5" and has a lower hight and a LCD remote I would be all over that 😀

I didn't say I didn't like it but it had some pit falls that I did not like in the 2nd Gen model and still soem in the 3rd Gen one.

Apples to apples my friend, apples to apples (pardon the pun).. The ipod is the LIGHTEST, smallest, sleakest hard drive player in the market.. Yes, there are lighter flash players out there and, yes, some minidisc players are lighter and smaller.. But NO player with as much storage as the iPod is smaller or lighter.. yet...

valid points...but for 250?
thats way too much money for this stuff.

Recently purchased a Panasonic MP3 Discman for 50 and its sick. I really really want an ipod but until they sell for 200 or less i will not purchase one. I have over 3000 songs on my hard drive and music is my life so I do know that I would use it a lot. But for now this mp3 discman is really holding me over. It came with a remote and now I have a new favorite pastime. I threw all my Modest Mouse, Radiohead and Smiths mp3's (700mb worth) onto a cd and hit random while going to sleep. I love it. I'm looking into a nomad jukebox zen but they just came out so i've decided to wait until next summer and see whats up with mp3 players. by then I'll have lots of disposable income and will be able to grab one cheap hopefully.

I once thought an iPod was a nice investment as well - until I did the math. A high end MP3 computer installation for a car (EPIA, 128mb RAM, 120g HDD, wired network port accessible under the hood, voice command, 300w inverter) is roughly $200.

So if you only need it for the car (The only conceivable place I can see you needing one unless you're still in school - like, high school), it's not the best solution.

if i ever get the money to spend i will definately be buying one. i go out of town often and lugging around CDs is no fun at all. not to mention it would be nice to have music to listen to on the bus ride to/from campus.

I hate to sound like Clinton, but how much is 'it' worth. It all depends on what 'it' is worth to you. You could buy 'it' for a vowel and a consonant, no?
