x1000 is an awsome laptop, the build quality looks much better than other POS hp or compaq laptops/pc's too, i think you should go for it

not worth 4-500 more for similar config IBM, you can beef up the laptop for the smae amount and buy 3 year warranty too

for a poor college student like myself, i'd pay hundreds of dollars less for the same specs anytime. dell > ibm if money is an object to me.

I just found a 10% off coupon for the compaq. So I can get the system mentioned above for $1266.20 shipped (AR).

No one can beat that.

50% of our companies Thinkpads needed mainboard replacements in under 2 years. All were A series but all from different batches and different times.

We use only Dell at work, but one of our top Sales execs' main client is IBM, so he goes there a lot. We got him an IBM because the IBM people heckled him :D I set it all up to our standards and it is freakin awesome. The build quality is defiantely higher...

What applications are you going to be running on the computer? You might consider getting a Thinkpad off ebay that fits your budget. IBM sells them on ebay with a warranty.

Thanks everyone for their input.

I ended up ordering a T41 through a "friends and family" discount. Should be shipping in a couple weeks. I am now counting the days.

Thanks again!

I think you need to Directly compare say the T41 to the Dell 600 series for the best comparision of features....Seems everyone makes the mistake of camparing on price alone which is where they make the biggest mistakes.

THE T41 comes with a 3 year warranty.... Go look again at your $1400 Compaqs and Dells and tell me if they offer a 3 year at that price. PROBABLY not. The Dell's and Compaqs also DON'T give you dual wireless/dual band antenaes -IBM Does.....I get better wireless reception/range with my T41 than I could ever get on another vendors box.

If your an IT shop, IBM is the better value as it does have the lowest TCO. As a consumer, IBM offers much better support and ease of use features and due to that may at least make the value arguement a wash in the consumer space.
