Are HP's rear-projection DLP television sets really that good?

A lot of people at avsforum.com seem to think that they're just as good as Sony's rear-projection SXRD sets. :Q

And apparently their DLP sets were designed in-house. What about their lcd and plasma sets?

Their plasmas are rebaged panasonics, dont know about their lcds though.

I saw what must've been a 70" one at Datavision...it was showing ESPNHD and it didn't look that great. They were still setting it up though and wouldn't let me see the remote to adjust it. That thing was HUGE though! :shocked:

Their largest set is 65'' and has a contrast ratio of 12,000:1 (which sounds insane).

Gotta watch out for those extremely high contrast ratios's... the honest way to measure contrast ratio is to do ita as an average across the entire width of the screen
which is what most companys do, while some (ie Panasonic) take the darkest & the brightest sections of the screen & compare them ... a perfect example of this is JVC plasma's & Panasonics which (a few years ago at least) were both made by Matsushita, the Panasonic was rated about 5 times higher then the JVC despite them being the identical screen.

There is no convention on how to measure contrast. If there was, then no display would meet specs. Panasonics have the highest contrast ratios on the market, despite some like Samsung rating theirs at 10,000:1 (compared to 3000:1 to 4000:1 on Panasonics).

JVC uses Panasonic's panel, but their own electronics. This made them excel in a few things, but inferior in many others.

Nope.
