Are hippies atheists or do they believe in some higher power?

All the hippies I've seen on TV are all into spirituality which leads me to believe they aren't atheists.

Since obviously ALL hippies are exactly the same...your theory holds water...right?

OR, could it be that "I saw it on TV, so it MUST be true," correct?

the hippie culture of the 60's evolved from the beatnik culture of the mid/late 50's. i'll assume this is who you're talking about, and i'll assume they aren't the people you saw on tv.

Non-specific "spirituality", though really "hippie" is a broader designation than you might think.

So possibly atheists in the sense of not believing in a god or gods, but some do believe in some religious beliefs, higher powers, or that the universe itself is god or we are all gods.

So: it depends.

Religion is believing in a deity or deities. It is to believe in a supreme or at the least a superior being higher than ourselves. Being spiritual and believing all things are connected is not religion. But to personify spirituality does make it a religion. That is the only fine line.

You can be spiritual and be technically an "atheist" if you do not believe in a higher power. Having a belief or faith in something is not necessarily a bad thing. I believe and faith that one day I'm be a billionaire, own several tropical islands, and marry the girl of my dreams 🙂 Not that any of those beliefs in mine are rooted in facts. Which is the biggest discriminator. Which is being able to recognize what you have faith in may not be right because you have no facts to back up your faith.

I hope that answers your question. Again for technical definitions.

Religion = Theism = belief in a deity(ies)
Atheist = do not believe in a deity
Spiritualism without personification = Atheism
Spiritualism with personification = Theism

Hippies - and neo-hippies - and their related offshoot branches - are worthless, I can tell you that much.

I worship the sun. I don't see it as a deity, but rather a burning ball of plasma that keeps the planet warm, keeps the plants growing, and keeps things well lit during the day.

I've met christian hippies, I've met Buddhist hippies, I've met "spiritual" hippies, but have never met a self-identified atheist hippie.

lol, yeah. Most lame hippie bashers are just reacting to caricatures from movies and tv.

My father calls himself a hippie, though perhaps not in the same sense that ATOT thinks a hippie is. He is absolutely not spiritual in any sense of the word, and hasn't gone to church or any other organized religious place since he was a child. He joined the marines as a Canadian to fight in Vietnam and hasn't cut (trimmed, not cut) his hair since. When I was a kid things were pretty average, but now he is living with a non-practicing wiccan, does not have running water, uses a generator for electricity when required and is generally anti-war depending on the circumstances, but not in a protesting kind of way. He's more anti-religion than anti-war. My point is, he's certainly leaning towards 'hippiness', but absolutely not spiritual. For the most part most of his friends are similar.

Well, I wasn't saying they didn't exist, just that I haven't met any. The last big crop of "hippies" I met were all part of a neo-pagan group.
