My friend in the room right now has hiccups and we're arguing whether or not it's bad to just let it die oiut by itself, or in general, if hiccuping is bad for you at all?

I dont think so. It is a spasm of the diaphram that causes air to be blowin out then sucked in real fast. I guess if the spasm became violent.

hiccups arent bad for you unless it becomes painful, like someone said.

yeah, if you pay attention to em they seem to last longer, I read that they are sometimes caused by miss fires in a nerve that runs along the sides of the wind pipe, and some times I find that rubbing my throat there kills them really quick. really. just above the adams apple.

Holding my breath for as long as possible always got rid of them for me... might be different with other people.

eating bulky foods too fast is a sure-fire way to get hiccups. you have to try to help the food down. can't think of anything but water. I try holding my breath and sucking.

hiccups aren't bad for you, it's just a muscle spasm as someone already said. Don't worry, your friend will live :p

I'm with paradocs...holding my breath usually takes care of 'em.

What's really cool is when an unborn baby has the hiccups. When my wife was pregnant, she'd let me know when our son had the hiccups so I could feel it! Way cool!
