Are handguns a good cure for depression?

I've never owned a gun, haven't really felt the need for safety or otherwise, but I have heard of gun owners talking about the confidence and self-esteem benefits of owning a gun. Would a gun be a good thing to buy to cure depression? I'm not depressed in a bad way like I want to hurt myself or anything, I just feel like life is so boring and I need a new hobby, so I was thinking of buying a gun just as a new hobby.

I was thinking about getting a glock, then figure out and do what is required for a concealed carry permit in my state. Not that I would actually carry the gun with me regularly, just because it would be something to do.

The firing range can certainly be therapeutic. Why not stop by your local range and try out a few guns to see how you like shooting?

Buy a cool car. I am a huge gun fan, but if you're depressed, I don't think that's the best answer.

But an inexpensive Corvette or something.

They have always been the same for me. If I have something to keep myself busy, I never feel depressed, but when I lose interest in things and find myself bored all the time I start to feel it. I just need to cure the boredom and the depression will go away.

Interesting you mention that because that was something else I have been thinking about. I have a decent car, Jetta GLI, 5 years old, 100% paid off. There are plenty of other new cars out there I would rather own, but it would be a new car payment every month that I didn't really need. Between the two possibilities, gun or car, buying a gun would cost a fraction of the price and would have a more lasting affect on my lifestyle.

Then go ahead and get the gun, the added hobby would be helpful. If you don't go to a gym, might I suggest also adding that? It's another hobby, uses time, and makes you feel better.

Absolutely, I have a gym membership but I have been slacking lately and haven't been going. I just know that going to the gym won't even come close to filling up my free time, so the gun idea still stands.

They're idiots. If you lack confidence and/or have low self-esteem I don't think owning a gun is a good idea to cure that. That's like buying fast car simply to pick up chicks. You aren't addressing the real problem, you are just masking your inadequacies.

I'm not sure I follow your logic. If you "mask" a lack of confidence, and make yourself come across as a confident person, you really are confident by any definition of it. I don't see how it's something that could be faked, except through drugs or alcohol.
