Are graves forever?

This has always bothered me. When someone dies and gets buried that land just sits there. So isn't it possible one day to run out of land. So it begs the question if there are any laws about graves like for instance, if a grave is over 100 years old it can be reused. Doesn't it bother you guys? The idea of it all.

There are laws. There was a news story I read a month or 2 ago about a 200 year 'lease' expiring on a plot and the current 'tenants' of the site being evicted.

I've wondered that too actually... can't say that it bothers me though.

i was under the impression that many cemetaries will cremate old remains and place them on some sort of memorial in/on the burial grounds

Haven't you ever seen an old graveyard on an old road or something?

What kind of creepy person would want to dig up old graves to build a house on the land or something?

I think they can remove the remains after 80-100 years in most of the US, IIRC.

I can tell you that once I'm dead, I really won't give much protest over what happens to me. Use me as a ventriloquist dummy, and I won't resist.

I figure either cremation or else just bury me in a biodegradable coffin. If your body is the only thing that you want to endure after you die, well, that just seems a bit shallow. It's what you do in your life that should matter, that should endure beyond your death. That's what people will remember.

That said, if people do want a plot in the ground for their dead loved ones, that's for them to decide. If it helps comfort them, or serve as a reminder of those who have passed, so be it.

Well then you get to know the ghosts who come back. Make them feel welcome, get to know them. They might have spent a lot of the afterlife being bored, what being stuck in limbo and all. Have nice parties on the weekends, and hey, if someone tries to break into your house, you'll have a small militia of ghosts ready to deal with the intruder.

That seems partially logical. What sort of age are we talking here? I've seen gravestones from the 1800's in some local cemetaries... what would they do with the headstones anyway? Think they have good resale value? ;) haha

In a few billion years the sun should expand to a red giant and consume the Earth. So, no, they aren't permanent. :)

lol, that just gave me a mental image of an open desert with millions of tombstones stretching across the land and a bunch of people with a "I don't know what to do!" frown on their face.

You can't say that for sure. By than we might be able to transform Earth into an intergalactic spaceship searching for another star and thus become an invading entity which can be debated also.

The plot for my parents, me and the ex-wife is leased for 50 or 100 years ( I need to check with dad). If someone in the family doesn't renew the lease after that period, our remains will be disposed of and the plot used for someone else.

Nope!

Here in Vancouver Canada many Native/Indian graves has make way for buildings.

Recently my family grave site in Vietnam (grandfather, grandmother, great aunt, great uncle, and aunt) was taken by the government and the remains was forced to moved/cremated for the sake of a new hospital.
