Are gold plated printer (or any) cables worth the extra money?

Years and years ago when I worked at Best Buy, it was highly suggested to us that if we wanted to get any hours, we get the big sales on printer accessories since it's such a monster of a markup. We'd only display a few "standard" stainless plated printer cables, and flood the aisle with gold plated Belkin cables, costing over $40.

Is the connectivity even remotely better with a gold plated cable? Is there ANY benefit besides lightening your wallet the gold cables provide?

Not for a printer but 'arguably' for a sound setup with high end equipment but I'm not hardcore Hi-Fi user and I'm a bit deaf also...

Seriously bmacd, ask yourself this - have you ever had a PROBLEM with a printer cable that was not gold plated? I can see why people would buy gold plated a/v cables - you can't easily test whether they work better or not. But for printer cables all you need to know is if the page printed.

Or how about *any* printer cable.

I work at future shop (Canadian Best Buy). We only sell the 29.99 Cicero Gold-plated cables, as well as lighted ones 'n stuff.

Wanna know how much I buy them for at cost?

3 BUCKS.

lol yea printer cables...ancient technology🙂

and yea bb is scummy. its lil ol grandma and other less knowledgable that they scam.

The ONLY thing that gold is good for is corrosion resistance. IIRC, both silver and copper are better electrical conductors than gold, not that it would make any difference in a printer cable.

Dang I just had to throw out a dozen USB cables that got so corroded on the ends they broke off in the USB ports.

^ never happens, but gold plated cables do it for margin!

gold-plated PRINTER cables? ROFL...what's next, completely gold power cables? (that would hurt...physically..and..mentally). That's so ironic I can't think of anything possibly worse. 🙁 I doubt even Kinkos uses these bad boys.

I worked at the UK equivalent of Best Buy (or Circuit City, I dunno), and here's the lowdown on Belkin gold-plated cables:

1. They cost 42p to make.
2. The store bought them at 65p each.
3. They were sold for £15+.
4. The Belkin rep told us that the connections in the regular cables are gold-plated anyway, so there's no need for these things but they make them a lot of money.

Completely pointless.

"Seriously bmacd, ask yourself this - have you ever had a PROBLEM with a printer cable that was not gold plated?"
. I don't know. I've never used a printer cable that didn't have gold plated contacts, even my $2.00, 10' USB cables have them. The shield shell may not be gold plated, but there is enough contact area that there is no difference. What is important is that if the contact metals are dissimilar under the plating (dissimilar metals hasten corrosion), that the gold (or other) plating be perfect (no pores) and thick enough to not wear off. Otherwise, little hairs of corrosion will grow thru the pores of the thin gold plating.
. See the full treatise (with pix and diagrams) on the Caig Labs web site - (beware, shameless plug here 😉 ) makers of some of the best contact cleaners and enhancers (and other technical/industrial chemicals) on the market in Deoxit and Pro Gold II. Use that stuff properly and it really doesn't matter much what the contacts are made of or plated with. I even protected my bike's handlebars and other plated parts with Pro Gold when I lived near the corrosive salt-bearing atmosphere of the Gulf of Mexico. Worked great - no pinpricks of rust for a year after the treatment.

.bh.

xtknight,
. Don't laugh - some PSUs now have gold plated contacts on their DC side cables - even I would cast a hairy eyeball if they started plating the wall cords... Helps to rake in the rubes and justify a higher price, doncha know? 😉 .bh.

It would seem that unless the whole cable is gold, then there is no reason to have gold plated connectors. In fact, I belive you would want to have the same material throughout the entire cord (including connectors). Something about the resistance being the same throughout the entire cord.
