Are generic camera batteries any good?

My canon sd-110's battery hasn't been holding a charge recently and after looking for a replacement. It turns out geniune canon batteries are pretty darn expensive and non-canon ones are about half the price. Anyone know if it's worth it to get the genuine battery or can I be cheap and get a different brand?

By brand, there is info on which brand is the best for generics but I can't remember who put it out. I think Steve's Digicam did.

Well that certainly clears things up! :D

I bought a battery and new charger (plus car charger) from some guy on ebay called itrimming. He's got pretty good feedback and a lot of it. It was like $11 shipped for the battery and charger. It showed up in just a few days, so I was pretty pleased with the service.

The battery is for a Canon SD600. It works. I got it and charged it up and sat there taking pictures with flash until it died (like 250-300 pics). I charged it up again and did it again. So it's okay for now. I guess it'll be a few months (or hopefuly years) before I really know how good this thing is.

The charger is huge compared to the one that came with the camera. It also makes a scary hum when you plug it in, and I wouldn't trust the thing to charge my battery if I wasn't home to see it catch fire. The battery also doesn't fit well into the socket. You need to push it in really, really hard and then use some kind of a lever to pry it out.

I bought both the battery and the charger because it's only like $11 shipped and my original battery has gone bad in less than a year. I'm trying to dedug whether the original battery really is bad or if it's actually the charger that went bad.

I bought a cordless phone battery from this same guy on ebay like three years ago. It's like $50 in store and I got it for like $9 shipped from him. The battery is still going strong.

Oh, and the guy sent me some discount codes for $5 off if you plan to buy $20 of stuff from him. PM me if someone wants it.

Also, pretty much everybody who's bought a Sterlingtek battery swears by it. Apparently they can last longer than the OEM ones.

Sterlingtek FTW. My Rebel XT's stock battery is 700mha, Sterlingteks are 1100mha. Two of them in a BG-E3 last forever.

I have also used itrimming. I bought two batteries and a charger for my Canon camcorder for less than half the price of just one authentic battery. I haven't noticed a difference between the two generic batteries and the authentic one. I've been using them for 3 years with no problems.
