Are fiberoptic lines better then copper phone lines?

I'm asking because, I have fiberoptic lines, and I only connect @ 26400, and I live 2 blocks from my access number. I was just curious to the differance in both types of lines, I know copper uses electricty, and FO uses light, but I'd like more info about it.

Fiberoptics should be better...I know when my local cable got put into fiber optics, my average download speeds doubled and it was a lot more reliable...

Optical at 26k?? There's something wrong. Are you using a dialup or what? Its definite that light is faster than electrons flowing through the copper wire. 🙂

Yes I use dialup, I have a 3COM 56k/LAN Ethelink III PCMCIA modem card. I've tried 3 differant ISP's and I never connect more then 28,800 and I connect 26400 most of the time, say 99% really.

there seems to be no noise on the line...So I don't know

Any suggestions?

It almost sounds like you're on pair gain, but you say you're on fibre... If you are indeed on fibre, you won't be getting DSL any time soon (even though that's off topic) 😉 Or even more likely, you're on a DLC.

This quote from DSLReports is focused on DSL, but it should give you an idea of what I'm talking about..

<< DLC is A Digital Loop Carrier. An SLC is an AT&T variety, 'lightspan' is another.. you may come across either or any of these terms when hearing why you cannot get DSL. Beginning in the 80s, to save money (copper loops are relatively expensive), Telcos began to install DLC frames around their existing wire centers, particularly in fast growing districts to provide for the flood of new lines required.

These local concentrators, although digital, and fibre optic, were designed before DSL was really available, and do not support it. They do support ISDN, however. It is estimated that nationally around 20% of US telephone lines are served from a DLC (the percentages vary slightly depending on which Telco you are talking about). Furthermore, about half of those DLCs are of an old type that do not support DSL. The newer half are installed capable of supporting DSL, but are only just being enabled for that..

You may be on Fiber optic but I doubt the entire lines going back to your server is. Yep it's better if the entire lines are all FO. Anyway, you should be getting better than 26K. Try looking for Initialization Strings to enhance you connections. You can start looking in hereModems

I didn't know i had FO lines until I called Verizon a DSL carrier, and they did a check while i was on the phone, or something to test the lines, "soory we can't help ya, you have FO lines, DSL uses the old copper lines"....

I don't know where to enter init strings, I seen one place in properties in dialup networking but when I put a command there (it was blank at first) and then hit "connect" my modem disconnected and gave me an error like modem not responding...

Any ideas?
