Are FAT32 partitions assigned letters before NTFS?

I have a single 60 gig HD partitioned as follows:

1. 2GB FAT32 (primary)
2. 7GB NTFS (Pirmary)
3. 51GB EXTENDED (primary)
-> 4. 51GB FAT32

When I try to install WinXP #1 gets assigned C:\, #4 gets assigned D:\ and #2 gets assigned E:\

I would like to have #2 = D:\

Is this possible, or am I just out of luck?

Generally no, but you can change drive letters in Windows XP, and in your case, there shouldn't be any problem. Check the AnandTech FAQs for how to do this.

Sounds like you create #2 during the XP install, while #1 and #4 are already there. Since #1 and #4 already exist at the time the install starts, they will get 'lettered' first.

Created #2 as a part of the install, reboot (to restart the install) and #2 should no be seen as D:.
