I keep getting invited to externships over the Christmas break. Some good companies too. From what I understand, you basically spend a day touring and shadowing.

Are these worth my time?

bump perhaps.
I don't really care that much actually, as I'm pretty sure its not worth my time.

you're not worth our time. j/k

hmm.. one day, how is that gonig to hurt? here in Minnesota, if I wanted to take a look at a company. I'd simply walk in, tell 'em I want to work for this company one day, what I'm doing with my life, share a couple of goals of mines, and they'll work somethin' out with me. show me around and tell me how I can get in.

don't be a lazy ass and pass up oppurtunities like this. goin' out of your way to look what a company has is one thing, but them contacting you, that's a whole diff. story. but you can't be in two places at once, so tell yourself if losing comfort is worth the risk. time's an investment, not a game to practice over and over again 'till you're six feet under.

good luck kidz

All of the externships are out of town for me. So I would drive 400-500 miles, stay in a hotel, then drive back.

They would be 0-100 miles away if I wasn't going home for Christmas vacation.

That would be why not.

Never heard of that, but in general, ANYTHING that helps you form connections to other executives is definitely worthwhile.

Maybe a year down the line your phone will ring with a great job offer from the externship place.

At minimum, ideas triggered in a different environment will help your creativity at your regular job (but you've got to be scrupulously careful to not pirate their know-how, their IP, nor to give thenm any know-how from your regular employer. In fact the exo place may ask you to sign an NDA, which you should read very carefully before signing. Strike out any clause requiring you to indemnify them.).
