Are External Harddrives Bootable?

I have a Lanparty nF3 250Gb MB. I have windows Xp Pro on my computer now, and I would like to play with Linux. I was thinking instead of playing with partitions, I would get a USB 2.0 HD enclosure for an extra drive I have, put Linux on there. Then when I wanted to use Linux, just go into the BIOS and change the Boot sequence. Anyone think that this will work?
