Are expensive designer sunglasses worth the price?

not likely. i like good sunglasses, but can find good stuff for under $100 easily enough that are polarized, pretty well made, and have good quality lenses. bolle is pretty damn decent and easily had for $40 - $60, serengeti (my favorites) can be had for under $100 and are damn fine sunglasses

sometimes they are. If you just see one that you like the look of, just buy it. Life is too short to be sweating little purchases. 300$ is less than 1$ per day for a year. If you enjoy wearing them everyday, then its worth it. Shrugs.

I just need a good pair with ballistic protection.

I just got some gargoyles for the same reason, and I am loving them so far. They were a very good deal at endless.com (even better than amazon by a few bucks).

They are comfortable and I hope that they offer as good of ballistic protection as gargoyle advertises (but hopefully I will never have to put their claims to the test :hmm🙂

Oooh googled and I want a pair.

How are they in terms of fit and size?

They fit very well. The arms are fairly flexible, so I would guess they could even fit on a larger-than-normal face/head.

I got the interval aviators, and I really like them because they are not like the giant aviators that you see in most places. They are also quite comfortable, and the nose cushions are very flexible.

wtf? does it really take an eye doctor to say designer glasses don't do anything more to your eyes than a regular $100 pair of sunglasses? they're designer glasses for a reason, you're paying more for the fashion and less on the functionality.

In terms of functionality, sure you can get a pair that'll do everything for you for under $100 (UV, polarization).

But you will pay more if you want certain things beyond basic functionality, like a really sturdy frame/metals that resist wetness and bending better, AR coatings like on the back of the lens, a durable polarization process, proprietary coatings (that won't delaminate), mineral glass, photochromic, better curvature lens cutting, unique design, then it's up to the consumer if it's worth it.

I'm fine with cheaper or more expensive sunglasses. I like the sturdiness and unique design of my more expensive "luxury" sunglasses and there is a major difference in build in the luxury brands I choose (certain lux brands offer more than others--that's up to the user if the price bump is warranted).

The maxim generally holds true, if you do good research you can get what you pay for based on your needs without getting ripped off from the marketing hype.

I looked them up as well and they look very nice! I just got a pair of cheapo sunglasses but didn't know what they were called, looks like they're the same style as the "interval aviators" Gargoyle has. Is there a different name other brands go under for this style? I don't need the ballistic protection and I'd like something polarized. I do like the price, though, and with Endless offering 40% BCB for the day I'd love to bite...

I have some Maui Jims that run ~$300 and I love them. I've had some nicer sunglasses in my life - the Maui Jims and Ray Bans - as well as the cheap Target sunglasses. I totally notice a difference. Albeit it may be minor in terms of the polarization and UV protection, but the fit and quality of the premium glasses just blows away any cheap pair I've had.

So I do not doubt that the ophthalmologist is correct in saying cheap can function as well as designer in terms of UV and polarization. However there is still much more beyond just basic function to the lenses.

I wear sunglasses i got from a work safe store. They look ok and are well built. If they break, they cost me 15bucks so win win

I'm not big on designer brands for most things...but sunglasses are something that I wear on my face almost every day. I'm okay spending a few extra bucks for them to look good.

I rememver an advertising eecutive explaing cat food. What goes in cat food is FDA regulated. You can learn more about the person buying premium cat food than you can learn about the cats pallet that is eating it. In other words, people buying premium cat foods are doing so for their own ego.

Paid $200 for my Maui Jims, and I'm still wearing them 3 years later. I am desperately looking for a pair of Ray-Ban Aviators, but they're all overpriced here. They're $95 in the US Online, but $167 at Sunglass Hut and more at opticals.

The only interesting thing I found in that article is that the master company owns Ray-Ban, Lens Crafters AND Sunglass Hut. Sunglass Hut is a rip off, and they rarely, if ever have sales that I've noticed.
