Are DVDs more susceptible to scratch damage than CDs?

Are DVDs more susceptible to scratch damage than CDs?

Due to the smaller track size on a DVD, I would think yes.

In other words: would an identical scratch that a CD could withstand cause a DVD to fail?

I will be purchasing a DVD+RW drive as soon as I can find one, as well as a DVD player for my TV, and would like to know if I need to give greater care to DVD disks or not.

Anyone know for sure?

A similar size scratch may do more damage if the dvd is a multilayer I would assume.

Depends on the orinetation of the scratch.

DVDs are just as redundant as CDs, but they do have a higher bit density.

So a 3mm scratch on a DVD covers more bits than a CD.

But if hte scratch is perpendicular to the tracks it still isn't likely to take out enough bits on any one track to make the DVD fail.

But yes, the DVD would be more likely to fail from scratch than a CD. But it depends on the scratch to.
