Will it be stable if I mod two Athlon XP's and run them in a Dual Configuration? I plan on using this as a server application on a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW+ or a CHAINTECH 7KDD (AMD 760 MPX). Thanks.

I don't see why not, people have done it a lot. I'll let someone with personal experience vouch for it, though.

If this server application is mission critical, it's probably best to pay the extra for the MPs. But if it's fault tolerent, than the XPs might do the trick.

What about a single chip Opteron setup?

check my rig below.

You better go with intel. mpx chipset is pretty much dead end.

The cost of a Xeon based Dual CPU system is far greater than that of an AthlonXP/MP based system. The AthlonXP's WILL work.

Mine are stable on my (now limping) Tyan Tiger MP. They are 1800 XPs, AGOGA core. I'm getting that same motherboard someday (it's shipped, but I have no idea when I'll get it). I'll let you know what happens. AFAIK, the only difference is that the MPs are certified to work in MP, and they don't have their L5s cut.

My rigs are good enough for video capturing, editing and encoding while all running SETI.

:) Sounds like a go. The Dual Xeon is out of my budget, it ends up being at least $300 more. Thanks.
