Are disc read errors common?

Does anyone get disc read errors every now and then with Xbox? I get such and such is not a DVD or Xbox game please insert a game to continue. I don't get it all the time just every now and then. Is this a sign that the drive if going or is the laser on the Xbox sensitive to dust and such?
