They seem cheaper than Inspirons/XPS but seem to have just as many good/decent customizable qualities - I was wondering if there was a reason for Vostros being cheaper than Inspirons/XPS because they seem to have similar specs

you get what you pay for. I got 5 vostro 400's that have tons of hardware problems.

hardware as in bad hinge/case, or hardrive/mobo?

motherboard. the funniest problem is the NIC trying to PXE boot even though it's disabled in BIOS.

If you like a flimsy plastic shell for a laptop, then yes - great deal. I love the rigidity of my m4400.

The older 00 line of vostros had a much more rigid casing then the new 10/20/30s. Too many people complained that the notebook was too heavy so they went with a thinner shell.

On a sad note, they now use a slower graphics card if you are interested in gaming on it. My notebook had a 8600gt but the best you can find on the newer vostros is a 8600gs.

i'm not sure what's up with dells but my mom n bro both bought desktop systems about 2-3 years ago and they've broken already (well the hard drives have failed on both, seagate barracuda 40gb). while my custom desktop that i built myself is still running after 5+ years and handling left 4 dead like a champ (i did upgrade the video card)
