Some of the high end Mustangs will come very, very close
Half a second behind to 60 is not very close in my opinion. Plus, you are half a second behind and driving a mustang.

Thoughts?

Hmmm what level of performance would he consider to be acceptable for the Vette?

This sounds like some sort of strange elitism where only certain car brands can be a true performance \ sports car.

tell him that Porsches are total midlife crisis cars.

Seriously, the percentage of Porsche owners who are bald and in their 50's is astoundingly high.

he's an idiot :)

handles too we'll in the 1/4 mile maybe.

last time i checked vette's were in the mid 40's, lower 50's... for that price you could buy and evo or sti, add a turbo back exhaust, exhaust manifold, intake, boost controller, turbo timer, bov, wheels/tires/breaks and your still sitting lower than a stock vette and a hell of a lot faster and much better handling.

imo your friend is a fool, tell him this for me.

lol, you must be thinking of '70s mustangs because vettes are NOT just 1/4 mile cars.

last I checked the corvette out-handled just about anything, too. It's LIGHT, as well as powerful and well-balanced. Not to mention it doesn't have the drivetrain losses associated with AWD, and I hate to break it to you but it blows the WRX out of the WATER when it comes to speed and acceleration.

The design of the fiberglass frame alone makes it an engineering marvel. They have amazing flex in corners, thus the good handling. This can be a problem though if you ever try to jack one up in the wrong place or even get in a minor fender-bender....you can ruin a frame pretty easily.

The vette is a grip of performance for the money. The Z06 coming out later should be really amazing considering the standard C6.

God not another "mod my car and it will smoke anything"

Seriously. They built a 7 second '81 Cadillac Fleetwood on Monster Garage last week.

That was hardly a 7 second car. More like 12 second.

Monster Garage tends to pad the end results of their projects, especially this season as they've upped the amount of money they can spend, and now basically have sponsorship.

Give me the $35K that was spent on that caddy and I can make it a 10 second car.
The freebies now are advertising dollars.

here is what lost all respect for me in the Corvette. They released a diagram showing the undercarrage without all of the body work. The front bumper doesent even TOUCH the quarters. The Mustang at least wraps around. That AND the front bumper is a rice-style, minimalist, inch square tube. Mustangs have guard rails. Now what happens when and suv rounds off a corner that you're just blazing through in your corvette? The suv wont even hit bumper, itll come straight in- you'll be eating your front right tire, speedometer and steering column. At least the mustang driver will have the protecion of his all steel 4 inch by 2 inch honeycombed STEEL bumper. You'll never miss a real bumper until you need it. Trust me, I am a mustang owner and I've needed mine :(

There is no such thing as a car that is "too fast" and handles "too well" for the money. That's like a girl who's "too pretty", just doesn't happen.

EVO and STi is a different type of car. Corvettes are an amazing bargain......and the technology behind it is good too. Who cares about modding?? A corvette can be modded also........the point is that corvettes are a good value and with the new C6, its even better.

You guys should read the book titled "All Corvettes are Red" by James Schefter.

It's a really good book that goes deep into the issues facing the deveopment of the C5 Corvette. Did you know it was extremely close to being canned during GM's tough times?

Do you know how quality obssessed the engineering team was over the Corvette? They wanted the C5 to be better than the C4 in every single aspect. They achieved amazing torsional rigidity, weight savings, and build quality....and doing this while getting screwed over by GM management numerous times.

They even tried to get a nice interior. BUt ergonomics and rattles were number one concerns; altho I read a paragraph disucssing how they wanted soft touch plastics in the dash. But their main concern was removing rattles.

It really is an exceptional sports car, and the more you read about the development of it and the passions of the car's creators the more you appreciate the car. It was truly built during tough times and its the dedication of that engineering team that made it the great car it is.

the interior on the vette is disgusting... it sucks, but the car is awesome otherwise
maybe that's why it's too good for the money.. the snag is the raunchy GM interior :D

the Z06 is one badass car though.. I'd take that shyte in a SECOND!

I love hearing crap like this...it's simply hilarious. The Z06 is either the only or one of very few production cars to reach over a G on the skid pad...it handles like it's on rails. To attempt to compare a EVO with a voided warranty (because of all the crap you've done to it) to a stock Z06 vette is hilarious. Along your same line, I could take a 89 vette...drop a z06 engine in it...put twin turbos on it...upgrade the suspension...and have a car which will eat your EVO for breakfast...and for less $.

Lesson to learn: Don't compare modded vehicles to stock ones...cuz someone can always mod a cheaper vehicle to be better than your modded vehicle for less money.

Regardless of performance, I don't think paying $50k for a 2-seater with very little luggage space as a "deal" or a "steal" or a "bargain".

Corvettes look great and have excellent performance. Otherwise, I think GM prices them appropriately.

Well..then thats where Id say, if I wanted to pay another 20K+ for a better interior, I would. Otherwise, what is the big deal? Who gets a "practical" sports car for the luxorious interior?
