I cant eat because i lack dexterity?

I should die?? Intelligent opinion.

I can still use my swiss army knife, and a fork, fairly well,

I thought the philosophy behind chopsticks was that the preparation of the food in the kitchen involved chopping everything up into reasonably bite size portions. This allows someone to use the delicate and refined chopsticks to elegantly place the morsels into one's pie hole. So the steak would already be chopped up when served. Only grungy fingered barbarians, apparently, eat with a knife.

The spork sounds like a more practical such utensil.

The reason why we are so fat in this nation.

because in the olden days and still true today that stabbing your food is bad luck...and un-polite...it was a civilized way to eat

If you go farther back, we were uncivilized in the beginning. We ate with our hands and had jagged ass teeth if we had them.

This is the reason i come here once in a while and just laugh......

I enjoy learning about the world I live in and when I get a chance to discover, experiment, explore and enjoy life then that is what life is all about. I have eaten food with my hands, utensils of all sorts and bottom line is enjoying the food, company and surroundings. As far as practicality, function and form, all utensils have their place depending on their use. Diversity is what I enjoy and right, wrong, etc has no meaning for me in this case.

I personally like using them when I'm dealing with like chicken, jasmine rice, and like a ..... sauce (couldn't think of the name) because it makes it fun, helps my fingers with movement (have bad fingers) and it get's interesting looks from people. Also on the note of the history....

history

Chopsticks are an important part of Asian culture. Their popularity and widespread use across Asia have a long and rich history. They come in all shapes and forms, from golden chopsticks engraved with calligraphy to disposable bamboo wari-bashi. Regardless of the form they take, chopsticks have evolved into an important icon of Asian culture and an important part of history.

It is believed the first chopsticks were developed over 5000 years ago in China. Early Asian man would retrieve his food from the fire using sticks or branches broken from trees. Later, as the population grew and resources became scarce, people would cut food into smaller pieces to save fuel because the smaller portions cooked faster. This eliminated the need for knives, and chopsticks became the utensil of choice.

The onset of Confucianism is believed to have further cemented the use of chopsticks as the primary Asian eating utensil. Confucius taught, ?The honorable and upright man keeps well away from both the slaughterhouse and the kitchen. And he allows no knives on his table.? Confucius? disdain for the presence of knives at the kitchen table, coupled with the popularity of his teachings no doubt contributed to the expanding use of chopsticks among the population.

By 500 A.D., chopsticks had spread from China to other countries such as Korea, Vietnam and Japan. While initially only used for religious ceremonies in Japan, chopsticks quickly gained popularity there as well, and their use became as widespread as the rest of Asia in no time.

Chopsticks come in many different forms. Bamboo tends to be the most popular material to make them from. There is lots of it in Asia, it is easy to split and it is especially resistant to heat. Other popular materials were wood and bone, and chopsticks made of precious metals were not uncommon among the wealthy. It was believed that silver chopsticks would turn black upon contact with poisoned food, although this has since been disproved.

Chinese chopsticks are called Kuai-Zi, which means ?quick little fellows?. They are typically 9 to 10 inches long, rectangular in shape, with blunt ends. Japanese chopsticks originally resembled tweezers made from bamboo, with the two pieces joined together at one end. By the 10th century they became two separate pieces. They are slightly shorter than their Chinese counterparts (7 to 8 inches long), are typically rounded and taper to a point.

It has been said by using chopsticks it improves memory, increases finger dexterity and can be useful in learning and improving skills such as Chinese character printing and brush painting. Many Asian superstitions revolve around chopsticks as well. For example, if you find an uneven pair at your table seating, it is believed that you will miss the next train, boat or plane you are trying to catch. Also, dropping your chopsticks is a sign of bad luck to come.

They are very inefficient. Try eating rice with them. I will use a spoon although most people would use a fork. The spoon is easier. Thanks.

I didn't bother reading the thread.

Chopsticks work for what they are intended. Asian foods tend to come prepared at a bite-sized level so you don't need to cut or anything. Softer foods can easily be "squeezed" in half by the chopstick. You can also grab and release things much quicker then the fork. The combo is usually the chopstick and the soupspoon. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything that you can't eat with those two.

Other then that, I see that the spork legend lives on. I feel content with my anandtech neffing.

chpsticks are actually very effective with eating rice. in fact, i have plenty of both forks AND chopsticks in my home. i prefer using chopsticks about 75% of the time. yes, i opt for the chopsticks for most things. i am adept at using both, mind you, and i find the chopsticks to be more "accurate". The fork is more brute force and good for larger amounts of food (ie mashed potatoes). Whereas the chopsticks fare much better in almost everything else that involve individual pieces of food. i prefer forks when im eating steak....and not much else, but that still requires a knife.

i definately think they are easier to use than forks in the sense that you dont have to try as hard to get what you want to eat. i dont think they're dumb at all.

Chopsticks are superior to fork and spoon if you have adequate skill. With adequate skill, they are very precise instruments of... well, eating ;)

What was the real reason? I can see that they are easy to make if you are short on metal.

There are metal chopsticks you know... cheap wooden chopsticks such as the ones you get in Chinese restaurants are the lowliest of low...

Prior to the popular use of forks, we ate with our hands and used hardened flat bread as our plate, and just scraped it cleaned every night until it got too moldy, then gave it to the peasants to eat. That is about as KISS as it gets.
