Geez! Dumbest thing ever??? Many people here on ATOT are Asian, and you just offended ALL of them. The point is that it is an all purpose utensil that can be used to eat anything!

even soup?

We just like to consolidate our utensils into one component. Having 2 identical components to one utensil doesn't make sense to us... the product of not having much culture, but making up for it in engineering mixed with a need to simplify things.

Chopsticks work great for the people that use them naturally, so they aren't dumb. But a fork is very versatile for almost anyone. I can dissect a steak and stab a single pea, or I can cradle a nice mouthful of stirfry. For flipping and manuvering stuff while cooking... once again, we consolidate parts and use tongs, wide CONNECTED chopsticks.

The spork is more impractical than chopsticks.

He called me uptight? Good to know he's basing his decision on all the posts I've made and not the one just in this thread.

There's a time when one is funny, and there's a time when one is an ass. Right now, you're in the latter. No matter what you say, you come off as arrogant and uncultured.

It was obvious that this thread was just a way to satisfy your boredom, because you could come on here, call names, and make ridiculous posts, rather than get a life and go do something else.

chopsticks rule.

theyre way more fun to use than forks.

only reason i use them 😛 I find it enjoyable cause you gotta work for your food 😉 That and its funny to hear people say that i use them better than asians do. hua hua hua if anyone wonders i got very good by learning to pick up jello with them....if you can do that without stabbing or breaking the square i see nothing that can stop you

SPORK!!!!!!!!
but really...chopsticks rule.. i can eat everything with em! when i eat spegetti i wanna use chopsticks!!

Chopsticks or forks? That argument is pointless. Everyone knows that 2 sporks with knife-like edges is the ultimate in control. The grabbing power of chopsticks, the stabbing power of forks, the scooping power of spoons, and the cutting power of knives. Does it get any better?

why doesn't everyone just use those than?

The chopstick is actually an all-in-one tool.

1) Eating
- Versatile enough to be used from picking up a grain of rice to picking up a slab of meat
- As mentioned, you can pick out a fish bone with it
2) Cooking
- Can be used in many forms, including:
- Egg Beater (scramble your eggs)
- Act as tongs (pick up anything, even in your frying pan or "wok")

So not only does the chopstick reduce the amount of utensils in your kitchen, they are:

a) Easier to store
b) Easier to wash
c) Takes up less room
d) Does not tarnish (assuming you don't have metal chopsticks)

Then there is the fact that it's cheaper to manufacture and cheaper to buy.

How can you possibly consider it as a useless tool. If anything, the fact that this tool has been used for thousands of years shows how ingenious of a tool it is.

why does anyone care, and why does this so called debate exist? do people hate diversity? its fun to use different eating utinsels every once in a while. you can easily learn to use chopsticks in a few days, or you can just make yourself use them every time you get japanese/chinese food. why do people so love arguing that something is better than something else? pretty much anyone sounds stupid trying to defend their favorite eating utinsel.

PHO is awesome...

I was teaching the wife & kids to use chopsticks years ago (they're better than me now) and the youngest was getting frustrated with trying to pick up a piece of chicken.

Sensing a teachable moment, I stopped her & showed her to spear the chicken with a chopstick, & eat it. It was like watching a light bulb going off in everyone's head:laugh:

None of us are good enough to eat rice with chopsticks & not starve to death though...

"Welcome to Chinese Restaurant. Please try your Nice Chinese Food with
Chopsticks the traditional and typical of Chinese glorious history.
and cultual."

I've never quite understood the point either.
Seems to me like eating with a knife and fork or a spoon instead is just plain easier.
Of course I never bothered to try learning how to use chopsticks, never saw the point when I'm skilled in the art of using knife, fork, and spoon 🙂

Just try eating a nice beef with chopsticks, or maybe some soup 😉

I know how to use chopsticks and I still find them silly. I mean, c'mon, you have thousands of years of wonderful inventions, and you are still using two sticks to pick up food?? 😛

well OP i am not sure if you are a biker but in case you are, try to answer this : arent bikes are the dumbest things ever? so prone to accidents, never seen a single person who rides bikes and hasnt had accidents 😛

chopsticks are extremely versatile. unless you are dumb and can't use them properly.

j/k of course about the second part
you know, sometimes you have to choose between versatility and ease of use.. like DIY computers vs vendor computers, PCs vs macs, the rest of the internet vs AOL and the list goes on.. chances are a user that preferes the latter is more likely to be a person with lesser intellect 😛

on a serious note chopsticks are :
easier to carry in volume if need arises
cheaper to produce
better for picking out only the things you want
(if you have 'community dish' it is a good commodity to have)

noodles (ramen or udon) work better with chopsticks unless you like to stuff a whole bunch in your mouth with every bite.

Just try eating a nice beef with chopsticks, or maybe some soup
i agree a huge uncut piece of meat would be something you wouldnt wanna use your chopsticks on. good thing there are tons of better ways to cook food 😉
