Are Celeron Notebooks noticeably slower than their PIII Counterparts?

Just curious cause ive seen some sweet lappy deals over in Hot Deals and im in the market...

yeah, typically celerons are noticeably slower, i think it has something to do with the cache size, certainly not positive though.

Depends on other factors too though. I've got a lappy with a 1.06 celery in it and compared to my bud's 1.1 PIII lappy i don't notice a difference. we run very similar apps and move around/edit very large audio files. The killer in laptops I will tell you though is the HD's. Compared to my desktop HD it's an utter dog.

yes they definitely are..i have a fujitsu 933mhz cpu p3 and i had to take in in for repairs. fry's electronic gave me a brand new toshiba 1ghz cpu celeron as a loaner and i can noticeably tell the difference between the two processors.

I've got a 600mhz celeron and its fast enough foe everything except playing day of defeat (barely). Are you looking at a new 1 ghz celeron or an older one? The cache may be different on the 600mhz celeron versus the piii, but laptop celerons in this range also run at 100mhz fsb so that helps out. I would say they are not noticebly slower.

Something to keep in mind:

The 1066 MHz "Celeron" laptop in Hot Deals is a 256K cache/133 MHz FSB CPU. What does that remind you of?

How about a Coppermine P3 @ 1066 MHz?

So while it carries the Celeron badge, it's a wolf in sheep's clothing. 🙂

The 1.1 GHz is NOT like this, though, it's a 128K/100 FSB.

Interesting.... Do ya think its worth the differences in price???

I mean buying a celeron lappy in Hot Deals as compared to spending a few hundred more for a PIII at compusa...

My point is that a 256K/133 FSB P3 laptop at anything under 1066 MHz will be SLOWER than the "Celeron" 1066 available in Hot Deals.

Yes, it's called a Celeron - But it's just a re-badged P3.

Just to keep myself updated, is that a Tualatin-based Celeron?

You are so dead on right there. Hard drives in notebooks are total dogs. Most of them are 4200rpm. If you can get your hands on a 5400rpm though it helps quite a bit. Problem is they aren't cheap.
Cheapest I found at pricewatch was an IBM Travelstar 32gb 5400 rpm for $249. Best bet is probably the 48gb for about $320 though.

Well the P3-Mobility CPUs at 866Mhz and higher are 512K/133FSB. They will be FASTER than the Celeron (is it worth it is the ?).

Hence the reason I specified 256K/133 FSB P3, like the Coppermine desktop variants.

It's kinda sad, I remember when my P3 700 @ 933 was pretty fast, my $800 laptop I have boxed up at home is faster.

Today I paid $176 shipped for a Gainward Golden Sample 128 MB GF3 Ti 200. I paid more than that for my GF2 GTS 32 MB back when they were new.

What's your budget?
What do you plan on doing with your laptop?

You might want to check out these awesome IBM ThinkPad deals, my favorite is the T series but they only have 2 of those and they are pricey, check out the A series, think I saw some NEW IBM ThinkPad P3's going for $799 and less with W2K!

Viper GTS, do not read the post above because you might be compelled to buy yet another laptop 😀

I just wanted to point out an alternative. The PIII-M is a powerful CPU that saves (substantial) battery life with "speed-step" technology (and is still priced well below the new P4-Ms).

And don't worry about me - my notebook should serve me well for awhile yet . . . no upgrading plans for it . . . 🙂 (but I DO have plans for upgrading my desktop when I get back to Cali in 3 weeks)
