Are Canadian PROVINCES 'equivalent' to U.S. States?

Yes, I believe they are equals.

The provinces, like states, have their own provincial gov'ts, set their own taxes, have unregulated borders, etc.

...as far as I know from personal experience, anyway.

So the next lower/smaller geographic area within a province is a county?

Does Canada even have counties?

No they have much more power in relation to the federal government than US States do.

well canada is a federation, so therefore provinces are equal orders of government with the federal gov't but with differing areas of responsibility. Plus the feds can tax much more than the provinces so they are usually seen as being "superior"

the United States is a state, UK is a state, Canada is a state. Country is a misnomer.

there are counties, regions, municipalities, cities, towns, cantons, etc...

these are all subsidiary to the provicial order of government so it varies from province to province.

hey, don't forget the smallish provinces like PEI and Newfoundland.

and the large states, like Texas and Cali.

size is irrelevant.

Each State in the U.S. typically has its own National Guard contingient. I believe all the provinces in Canada share the one tank.

No its usually parked in one place. We have a cardboard cutout we like to pass around. Its cheaper that way.
