Are businesses allowed to charge service fees to use interac (debit card) when paying for goods/service?

I know it's against the credit card companies TOS, but what about using the interac machines?

I tried to pay for my meal today and they wanted to charge me $1.50 to use the machine so I just paid with cash.

I'd guess that they are. The same way you'll be charged a fee if you use an ATM that doesn't belong to your bank.

It kinda annoys me. I know places like grocery stores charge only if you pull out cash, otherwise it is free.

If you have to enter your pin then they can charged what ever they want to and so can your bank.

That is why you should always use the credit option and if none is given they are charging a fee.

They can charge you whatever they want and they have to tell you. If you don't like it just go shoping elsewhere.
In my region of the woods, verry few businesses charge an extra processing fee at the counter.
